UWF heads to Oklahoma for ITA National Team Indoor Championship

Tournament includes Top 7 teams from final ITA Poll of 2019

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The third ranked UWF Men's Tennis Team will spend the last weekend of February in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the Inaugural ITA National Team Indoor Championship which will take place Friday, February 28th to March 1st.

The tournament will feature seven of the top eight teams from the final ITA national team poll of 2019 which includes Barry, Columbus State, Hawaii Pacific University, UWF, Wingate, Saint Leo and Flagler University.

Midwestern State University is also in the tournament by virtue of being the host team.

UWF, 6-1 and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference, is heading into the tournament on a six-match winning streak after falling in their season-opener to Georgia Gwinnett.  This season, the Argos are led by three seniors.  Nationally ranked singles players, Serdar Bojadjiev (11th) and Juan Cabrera (30th), have gone a combined 8-2 in the team's six match win streak.  Providing support is fellow regionally ranked senior Juan Motta (19th in the south region) and freshman Adam Svensson.

Motta has been 2-0 since returning from injury while Svensson, a Swedish native, was named GSC freshman of the week during the period from 2/10-2/16.

Scouting the Field: Barry comes into the tournament, currently ranked #1 in the nation.  The reigning national champions are off to a 2-0 start which features a win over #6 Flagler.  Barry will lean the nation's #1 ranked one player in Alejandro Ibanez who won the national title last year.  Columbus State, placed at #2 in the current ITA poll, is 4-0 in the season as which includes a win over GSC foes, West Alabama and Auburn Montgomery.  The Cougars are a younger team who look to sophomore Christian Garay, the reigning Peach Belt Player of the week, to lead them.  Hawaii Pacific will make the trip to Oklahoma City currently occupying the ninth spot in the poll.  The Sharks come in at 4-3 overall and were the West Region I champions in 2019.

Wingate comes into the tournament at 2-0 with dominant wins over Belmont Abbey and Mount Olive, 6-1 and 7-0, respectively.  Daniel Belsito is one to watch for the Bulldogs as he was the SAC Player of the year in 2018, going 18-2 that year in singles action.  Saint Leo comes into the match having played only one game which was a win over Flagler.  Keep an eye on junior Aurel Ciocanu as the junior Montreal, Canada, went 18-6 last season, finishing with a seven-match win streak. Flagler, currently ranked seventh in the country is 1-3 overall, however all those losses came to ranked opponents at the time in Florida Southern, Saint Leo and Barry.  Midwestern State is the final entrant and they are 4-4 overall, ranked #15 in the current ITA national poll.

West Florida will begin play on Friday with a match-up against Wingate.  The time for the match between the Argonauts and Bulldogs is TBA.
