BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- A decade of dominance.
Following 239 victories, numerous All-Americans and national players of the year in singles and doubles play along with ITA national champions in singles and doubles and two team national titles in 2014 and 2017, the UWF Men's Tennis Team was awarded with eight student-athletes and coach
Derrick Racine on the Gulf South Conference All-Decade Team spanning from 2011-2020, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Leading off the four student-athletes who were selected to the first team is Bruno Savi. Savi, also chosen as the player of the decade, had numerous accolades during his time as an Argonaut. He was an ITA All-American in singles during the 2012, 2013 and 2014 spring seasons along with being named an All-American in doubles in 2012. Bruno was named GSC player of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2014 to go along with his GSC first-team selection during those corresponding years. Savi saved his best for last in 2014 when he was named the ITA National Senior Player of the year, went 24-0 in singles action, including an impeccable 11-0 versus nationally ranked opponents and capped off the year by winning the National Team Title with UWF.
Serdar Bojadjiev, the 2018 and 2019 GSC player of the year, is next on the list of Argonauts who made the first team. An ITA All-American in singles play in 2018, 2019 and 2020, Bojadjiev burst onto the scene on the 2017 West Florida squad that won the national title. A 21-1 singles record which included two victories against nationally ranked opposition, earned him the 2017 GSC Freshman of the Year. A GSC first-team selection in 2018 and 2019, Bojadjiev also had seven wins in 2019 and 11 during the 2020 spring season before the COVID-19 outbreak.
A standout during the early part of the decade, Kevin Ducros, is the third Argo to land on the first team. Ducros, a four-time ITA All-America in singles including 2010, 2011 and 2013 as well as a two-time All-American in doubles in 2010 and 2012, was a major cog in UWF's 88 victories from 2010-2013. An All-GSC first-team member in 2010, 2012 and 2013, Kevin was also the 2013 ITA South Region Senior Player of the year. One of his most remarkable achievements was amassing a 48-8 record in doubles with fellow all-decade member, Savi.
Alex Peyrot, a standout on the 2017 national championship team and two-time GSC player of the year, is the fourth and final member of UWF who made the all-decade first team. A honoree of the prestigious GSC "Top Ten" during the 2016-2017 academic year, Peyrot earned the selection by being an ITA National Champion in doubles in 2016 and a member of the GSC All-Academic team later that spring. Alex was also selected to the 2016 GSC All-Academic squad. He began his career by being named an ITA All-American in and GSC Freshman of the Year in 2014, along with winning a team national title with UWF that same year. Peyrot was also named to the All-American squad in singles action in 2015, 2016 and 2017 as well as being selected to the All-GSC First Team all four years of his career, making him only one of five Argos to have that distinction.
Kenny Brasil, an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles during the 2016 season, begins the list of Argonauts awarded as a second-team selection. Brasil, a GSC All-First Team selection in 2015 and second-team honoree in 2016, was a mainstay on a 2015 squad that went 27-4 and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. He accumulated 20 wins in singles play along with 25 victories paired with doubles partner
Alex Peyrot during the 2015 campaign. He also won a national team title with UWF in 2014.
2010 ITA National Rookie of the Year Leandro Ferreira is the next Argonaut on the All-Decade second-team. Ferreira, also awarded as the 2010 GSC East Freshman of the Year, was an ITA All-American in doubles during the 2010 season along with being named as ITA All-American in singles and doubles for the 2011 campaign. An All-GSC First-Team selection in both 2010 and 2011, Ferreira was a standout on the 2011 Argos who went 21-10 and reached the NCAA Regional Finals.
Andrey Pozhidaev rounds out the list of Argos on the second team. Pozhidaev, who played from 2009 to 2012, was an All-GSC first team selection all four years of his career, similar to fellow GSC All-Decade honoree,
Alex Peyrot. Pozhidaev had his two best seasons during the 2011 and 2012 spring seasons. In 2011, he and Leandro Ferreira posted a 23-4 mark as a pairing, besting six national and 11 regionally ranked opponents to earn a spot on the ITA All-American squad. The following year, Pozhidaev amassed 24 wins in singles play, with nine of those victories coming against nationally or regionally ranked opposition.
2017 National Team Champion
Pedro Dumont is the last student-athlete to make the all-decade team an honorable mention selection. During the 2016-2017 season, Dumont was an ITA National Champion in doubles during the 2016 fall season, which earned him an ITA All-American selection in singles and he was also named to the GSC All-First team. He played a vital role in the 2017 title run, playing at the No.1 doubles spot and the Nos. 3 & 4 singles positions. Dumont was also named an ITA All-American in doubles after the 2016 season. Unfortunately, Dumont passed away in July 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Head Coach
Derrick Racine was chosen as the coach of the decade following the team's impressive run from 2011-2020, which saw the team win two national titles, adding to the two he previously won in 2004 and 2005. Racine guided the Argos to a remarkable overall record of 239-41 over that span, including a streak of 51 consecutive victories in GSC matches during the middle part of the decade. He coached seven GSC Players of the Year, two GSC Freshman of the Year, 28 ITA All-Americans and had an ITA National Champion in both singles and doubles in 2013 and 2016. For his success, Racine was rewarded with the GSC Coach of the Year honors seven times as well being named the ITA South Region and National Coach of the Year in 2012, 2014 and 2017.
