PENSACOLA, Fla.- Following 15 consecutive Gulf South Conference games, the 21st ranked UWF Baseball Team will get their first taste of non-conference action when they host Spring Hill on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field. The contest will wrap-up a 16-game home stand for the Argos.
UWF (11-4), is coming off a three-game sweep over GSC foe, Mississippi College, over the weekend. In a microcosm of the early portion of the season, the Argonaut pitching staff was dominant with starters,
Ryan Brewer,
Evan Floyd and
Tyler Dowdy, only allowing one run over 16 innings of work. Brewer and Floyd each went at least six innings with the former having six strikeouts while the latter had 10 in a seven-inning complete game effort as the Argonauts run-ruled the Choctaws in Floyd's start. With both pitchers picking up a win, Brewer and Floyd remain in the top three of the GSC in pitcher wins.
Relievers,
Brendon Case and
Josh Pahlad picked up their fourth and third saves of the season, respectively.
The Argo bats were hot all weekend as well with the team averaging nine runs per game, in the three-game set.
Jason Roberts,
Dylan Menhennett and
Cullan O'Shea were all standouts, with Roberts going 7-13 for the series with five RBI's, Menhennett had six hits and two RBI's, and O'Shea finished with six hits and six RBI's on the weekend. Each player hit a home-run in Saturday's double-header as the Argos had four total in the two games.
The Man From Mississippi: Menhennett, a red-shirt junior from Biloxi, Mississippi, has been the man to jumpstart the offense in recent weeks. Starting all 15 games, Dylan has a .368 batting average on a team-high 21 hits. His eight multi-hit games have contributed to his 30 total bases, tied for first on the team with O'Shea. The red-shirt senior is also tied for first in runs scored (14), tied for third in doubles (3) and second in RBI's (14). With his homer on Saturday, Menhennett paces the Argos in home-runs with two on the year. Menhennett ranks in the top 10 of the GSC in runs scored, RBI's and sacrifice hits.
Swinging the Bats: With the top team batting average in the GSC (315), UWF has gotten key contributions up and down the line-up. Six Argo regulars have a BA over .300, with Roberts holding a .526 average to lead the team. It all starts at the top with third baseman
True Fontenot, who has upped his average in recent weeks to .327. Through 15 games, Fontenot has 16 total hits, which includes two doubles, a home run and nine RBI's to go along with a .438 on-base percentage. Beyond him, O'Shea is batting .333 with a team-high 16 RBI's, while both
Justin Dunnam and
Matthew Estrada have BA's of .308 and .304, respectively.
West Florida also ranks second in OBP (.397) and fifth in the GSC in runs scored (97) on the year.
Brewer & Floyd; The Starters: With Brewer and Floyd making five starts apiece, UWF arguably has the top starting pitching duo in the GSC. Brewer, a red-shirt junior from Apopka, Florida, has made an impact as the game one starter all year. Tallying a 2.64 ERA in 30 innings pitched, the right-hander has only allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in 2021. Leading the GSC in wins with four, Brewer has only allowed more than two runs in one start, while holding his opponents to a .244 batting average, which ranks in the top 16 of the conference.
In the second game of the series, West Florida has relied on Floyd, who has been equally as good as Brewer. Through five starts, Floyd is second in the GSC and first among starting pitchers with a 1.29 ERA, having allowed only five runs (four earned) over 28 innings pitched. Evan has also struck out 30 batters while only walking five, and has held opponents to a .156 opponent batting average which ranks second in the GSC.
Shutting the Door: Contributing to a GSC-low, 3.45 staff ERA, the Argonauts have not only received dominant starting pitching, but they have also had shutdown pitching out of the bullpen.
Brendon Case, the primary closer, leads the GSC in saves with four, while also holding a 2.64 ERA in eight appearances. The red-shirt sophomore has only allowed five hits while striking out nine.
Josh Pahlad, mostly used in relief of Brewer, has been a dynamo out of the 'pen with his 18 strikeouts, which leads all West Florida relievers. Holding a 3.86 ERA through six appearances, the red-shirt junior is second on the team in saves with three, with all three coming in multi-inning appearances.

Argos In The NCBWA Rankings: Following the three-game sweep of Mississippi College, UWF has jumped a spot to number three in the South Region Rankings as they received 54 total points. Tampa held steady in the top spot, while GSC foes Lee and Valdosta State check in at the number two and number four positions. Sunshine State member, Florida Southern, rounds out the top five.
Scouting Spring Hill: Led by Frank Sims, who is in his 37th season with the program, SHC comes into Tuesday's match-up at 4-4 overall. Graduate student, Joseph Guidry, is currently leading the Badgers with a .421 batting average through eight games. Guidry has totaled seven doubles and a team-leading eight RBI's this season. First baseman Walker Imwalle is tied with Guidry, as Imwalle has eight RBI's as well.
On the mound, Geo Camfield and AJ Fell have each tallied 14 strikeouts as they have each started at least two games for the Badgers in 2021.
Series History: UWF is 17-3 all-time against the Badgers, which includes a 12-1 mark at Jim Spooner Field. West Florida has won the five last games in the series, which includes a 8-6 victory in the last meetings between the two teams in April of 2019.
