No. 4 UWF Builds Large Lead After 36 Holes at Matlock

Elias Haavisto leads the field by a shot and all five Argos are in the top 16

DAY ONE RESULTS & TUESDAY LIVE SCORING

LAKELAND, Fla. – The fourth-ranked UWF men's golf team turned in the only round under par in the opening 18 holes to build a 9-stroke lead that then ballooned to a 17-shot advantage in the afternoon after the first day of the 40th annual Matlock Collegiate Classic at Lone Palm Golf Club on Monday.

UWF played its first three holes at 5-under-par to open the tournament before completing the first round at 2-under-par 286. The Argonauts saw their streak of consecutive rounds under par end at four in the afternoon with a 2-over-par 290 score. UWF is in first place with a 576 total, well ahead of No. 5 Barry and No. 14 Limestone at 593. No. 2 Lynn is in fourth at 597 and No. 13 Nova Southeastern is in fifth at 606.

Elias Haavisto opened the day on fire, birdieing three of his first five holes while later adding an eagle on the 560-yard, par-5 11th hole on his way to a 67. He added an even-par 72 in the second round and holds a one-shot lead with a 139.

Alejandro Restrepo is five shots back and tied for third at 71-73=144. He birdied the par 5 second hole to start both of his rounds but was unable to get any lower throughout the day.

Jake DeZoort signed for a 72 before a 73 put him tied for seventh at 145. He got to 2-under-par on the front nine in each of his rounds before bogeys dropped him to his final scores. He made or better on all four par 3s each round and his birdies at Nos. 4 and 6 in the second round made him the only player among the 78 in the tourney to play the par 3s at under par.

Carlos Marrero and Cameron Bonner both shaved multiple strokes off their round one scores to charge back in the afternoon. Marrero is tied for 11th with a 77-72=149 and Bonner is tied for 16th at 76-74=150.

As a team, UWF played the par 5s a combined 12-under, while also pacing the 14-team field on the par 3s at 8-over and par 4s at 11-over on a day that saw high winds most of the day.

UWF has finished in the top four of the Matlock each of the last six years and has won the event in 2011 and 2017. The Argos set the tournament record with a 34-under effort in 2017. Their eight top-3 finishes all time are the third most in tournament history. Since the event moved to Lone Palm GC in 2008, UWF, Lynn and FSC are the only schools to win the title more than once, each doing so twice.

An Argonaut has claimed medalist honors twice since UWF began competing in the event. Matthew Galloway claimed back-to-back Matlocks in 2007 and 2008. In recent years, Marrero was third last year, Chandler Blanchet tied for fourth in 2018 and was third in 2017, Jacob Huizinga was second in 2017, Talin Rajendranath tied for fifth in 2014 and Blake Olson tied for second in 2011 and was third in 2010.

The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The Argos will be paired with Barry and Limestone beginning on holes 1-3 in the shotgun starting format.
