PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida Men's Tennis Team will be back in action this Sunday when they take on Montevallo in their regular-season finale here at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
With a record of 13-4 on the season, including a 7-1 mark in conference play, the Argonauts are looking to wrap up their regular season on a high note before they begin Gulf South Conference Tournament play on Thursday.
As the No. 8 ranked team in the nation in the latest ITA Team Rankings, West Florida has played some great tennis recently picking up wins in their last two matches. Sunday's match will also be a special day for four of the Argonauts as they play in their final home match of their careers.
Senior Day Festivities – With Sunday's match being the final regular-season home match for the Argonauts, four players will be recognized for their contributions to this West Florida Men's Tennis team.
Prior to the match,
Serdar Bojadjiev,
Nicolas Lecoutre,
Juan Motta, and
Lucas Pedrotti will be recognized for all of their hard work and dedication given to the program.
Bojadjiev has joined the ranks as one of the top men's tennis players to have come through West Florida being named a three-time ITA All-American and National Champion during his time with the Argonauts. After winning GSC Freshman of the Year in his first season, Bojadjiev has gone on to win GSC Player of the Year twice and was named to the GSC All-Decade team this past fall.
Lecoutre has been another feature piece in the West Florida lineup these past three seasons picking up huge victories in singles and doubles each and every season. In 2018, Lecoutre was named First Team All-GSC after going 12-9 in singles as well as 20-3 in doubles.
Motta leaves West Florida after not only impacting the Argonauts with his outstanding play on the court but his great work in the classroom as well. Named to the GSC Academic Honor-Roll in every season he has played, Motta has been a shining example of a student-athlete. Ranked as high as the No. 38 single's player in the nation, Motta brought his competitive spirit and fight each and every match for the Argonauts.
Coming to West Florida from Bloomsburg University, Pedrotti has given it his all during his time as an Argonaut. This season Pedrotti saw his first action as an Argonaut and made the most of it winning in doubles with
Lluis Miralles Miro against Spring Hill. Thank you Lucas and all of the rest of these players for the countless hours and support they have given the program.
About West Florida – The Argonauts head into Sunday on a two-match win streak after taking down West Alabama and Mississippi college in their last two matches.
Over these past few matches, West Florida has continued their dominance in doubles play winning the lone point in now 12 straight matches. This success is bolstered by the No. 11 ranked pair in the country as well as a pairing that has won their last 11 matches.
Salvador Bandeira and
Gabriel Nery serve as the top pairing for the Argonauts compiling an 11-5 record on the season which was good enough to see them ranked No. 11 in the nation in the latest poll. In addition to this success from the top of the double's lineup,
Nicolas Lecoutre and
William Shkrob have been on fire as the No. 3 pair winning their past 11 matches as a pairing.
In singles, the Argonauts have had some struggles finding consistency from match-to-match but have tightened their play as of late to pick up victories each of the past two times they have played.
Bojadjiev found his rhythm against West Alabama this past week taking down Christopher Bulus who was recently ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles play.
Juan Cabrera has been the steady piece all season for West Florida going 14-0 from numerous positions on the season including a win from the No. 1 position his last time out against Mississippi College.
About Montevallo – The Falcons enter the match with a 4-10 record including losses in their last two. Currently 3-5 in the conference, Montevallo is looking for a big win on Sunday to improve their seeding for the upcoming conference tournament.
Doubles have been the key to the Falcons success this season winning the lone point in all four victories on the season. Milan Ludlage and Philippe Zehender have led the way for Montevallo in doubles with a 4-8 record on the season including three wins as the No. 1 pairing.
In singles, Montevallo has had its ups and downs as well compiling a 34-48 record in singles on the season.
Gavin Salton has been successful for the Falcons from the No. 5 position going 7-3 to this point in the year. Dylan Valentine has stepped up into the No. 1 position in singles as has been a tough player to take down winning two out of his last three matches.
