UWF Finishes Sixth In Wind-Blown Argonaut Invitational

The Argonauts will turn their attention to the postseason beginning next weekend

COMPLETE RESULTS

PENSACOLA, Fla. – On a day where winds were measured at a consistent 25 miles-per-hour and the final 90 minutes were played in a downpour, the 14th-ranked UWF men's golf team made a strong charge before finishing in sixth place in the Argonaut Invitational Tuesday at Pensacola Country Club..

UWF posted the low round of the day at 3-over-par 291 but was sitting at 4-under with four holes to play, which would have put the Argonauts at 7-under for the tournament and in contention for the team title. But after making 10 birdies and six bogeys over the first 14 holes, the squad made five bad numbers and slipped back to where they started the day in sixth position.

No. 6 Arkansas Tech shot the highest round among the top nine teams at 12-over-par 300 but was able to hang on for the team title. The defending NCAA Division 2 National Champions scored a 7-under-par 857 for a 4-stroke win over No. 5 Lee at 861. No. 11 Limestone and No. 8 Oklahoma Christian tied for third and No. 9 Georgia Southwestern was fifth, just a shot ahead of UWF.

On Tuesday, UWF got a red score from Cameron Bonner, who used a 2-under-par 70 to move up 19 spots into 16th position with a 217 total.

Elias Haavisto and Patrick Poate each finished the 54-hole event in the top 15. Poate followed Monday's 66 with a 73 to crack the top 10 for the first time as an Argo with a season-low 214. Haavisto used a 75 to finish a shot back in 14th position.

Carlos Marrero had a strong round going, sitting at 3-under with three holes to play before a double bogey and bogey saw him slide out of the top 20 to finish tied for 33rd at 71-77-73=221.

Chris Ayers tied for 67th at 229.

Of the three Argonauts competing as individuals, Jake DeZoort was the highest finisher, coming in tied for 27th at 74-71-75=220. Felipe Garces improved each round to finish at 221 in 42nd and Nicolas Rubio tied for 67th at 229.

Arkansas Tech's Francois Jacobs held on to his 36-hole lead by birdieing two of the final five holes to pull away for a 2-shot victory with a 11-under-par 205 total.

UWF will now turn its attention to preparing for next week's Gulf South Conference Championships. The 54-hole event will be April 15-16 at the RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Alabama. The Argos have won the last eight league tourneys and a GSC-record 18 total championships in 26 years of membership.
