PALM HARBOR, Fla. - The eighth-ranked UWF men's golf team went back and forth with ninth-ranked Lee in the final round of the Copperhead Championship before the Argonauts collected a runner-up team finish. Lee ended the 54-hole tournament at the Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course with a 853, two strokes ahead of UWF for the second-consecutive year.
The 855 score for tournament-host UWF was a season-best as they finished the fall portion of the 2023-24 season with a third top five performance in four events.
The field was arguably the toughest in Division 2 golf this year as it featured eight of the top 11 teams in the country while all 16 were either ranked or receiving votes in the Golf Coaches Association of America poll.
Nico Lang led the UWF individual effort, finishing in second place with a 68-70-71=209, 4-under-par. He was in fourth place after the first round and second after the end of Monday's 36 holes but was unable to overtake Oliver Lewis-Perkins of Lee, who used a final round 66 for a 202. The 66 was one shy of the tournament record 65, set by UWF's Christian Bosso in 2018.
Cooper Tendick fired a final-round 69 to move up 11 spots into eighth place with a 73-70-69=212 total.
Mason Minkel tied for 26th at 72-74-73=219, while
Eddie Lee and
Max Page were in the top 50 with 222 and 223 scores, respectively.
Jack Burbee and
TJ Thompson were playing as individuals for the Argos, with Burbee shooting a 77-74-70=221 and Thompson 77-75-75=227 in his first collegiate action.
The Argos will return to play Feb. 5-6 at the Matlock Collegiate Classic in Lakeland, Florida.
