No. 8 Argonauts Face Three Teams Over the Weekend

The Argos willl square off against two GSC opponents

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 8 West Florida men's tennis team is set to play three road matches over the weekend. The Argonauts will face GSC foe, Christian Brothers at noon on Friday. On Saturday, UWF squares off against Harding at 10 a.m. and the Argos will wrap up the weekend at Delta State for another GSC match at 10 a.m.

ABOUT UWF
The Argonauts split last weekend at Shorter and Lee with a sweep over the Hawks 7-0 and came up short to Lee 4-3 on Saturday. West Florida ranks in the top-10 in the ITA Poll released on Feb. 17 as the No. 8 team in the nation.

Returner Facundo Bermejo ranks No. 6 while Sebastian Sotelo and Mateo Martinez rank as the No. 12 and No. 15 in the ITA Singles Poll. Bermejo and his partner Tomas Descarrega rank among the best in Division II men's tennis with a No. 2 standing in the ITA Doubles Poll ranking.

Newcomers Martinez and Sebastian Rondon have had a strong start to the season going 2-0 in singles. Martinez played singles from the No. 3 position while Rondon played from the No. 2 position.

ABOUT CBU
The Buccaneers are 4-2 to start the Spring season. JoJo Sandoz recently earned GSC Player of the Week on Feb. 15. Sandoz is the first player in program history to receive this honor. The junior from Metairie, La. went undefeated 3-0 in singles play against Shorter, UT Southern, and Berry. MJ Garnett is in his eighth season as head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs.

UWF vs. CBU History
West Florida is on a 13-0 win-streak against the Bucs. The Argos swept CBU on their home court last April 7-0. From throughout the lineup, UWF dominated the courts taking the lone doubles point and winning from all seven singles positions.

ABOUT HARDING
The team from Searcy, Ark. is 4-2 this season after finishing 10-9 last season. For the Bisons, Cian Mikkelsen and Cas de Ruiter are undefeated 6-0 as a pair from the No. 2 position. Dani Ortiz leads the Bisons in singles with a 3-0 start from the No. 1 position. David Redding is in his eighth season at the helm of the Harding men's and women's tennis program. His men's team has gone 80-49 (.620) in the past eight years under his direction.

UWF vs. Harding History
This is only the fifth meeting between these two squads with the last match being in 2011. The Argos hold the 4-0 record with four straight 5-0 sweeps over the Bisons.

ABOUT DSU
The Statesmen are on a 0-3 start to the season with GSC play starting this weekend with a match on Feb. 25 against West Georgia and West Florida on Feb. 26. The Statesmen found some momentum against Southeastern Oklahoma State with Emiliano Elazarraraz winning his singles match 6-4, 6-4 from the No. 1 position and Franco Roland claiming the victory in the third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 from the No. 3 position.

UWF vs. DSU History  
In their last meeting, UWF won 5-2 against the Statesmen, taking the lone point in doubles and five out of the seven singles matches. This match will mark the 21st meeting between these two teams.
