No. 4 Men's Tennis Prepares for Top-Five Showdown in Valdosta

The regular season champion will be crowned

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 4 West Florida men's tennis team prepares for a top-five matchup against GSC foe, No. 2 Valdosta State on Monday. The first set is slated for 2:00 p.m. (EST) at the VSU Tennis Complex.

The winner of this match will be crowned the Gulf South Conference regular season champion.

ABOUT UWF
*The Argos are ranked in the top-five ITA national ranking as the No. 4 team in the nation. West Florida is 14-2 and 7-1 in conference play.
*In the GSC standings, UWF is seated second behind Valdosta State.
*The Argos went 8-0 at home for their second consecutive season. They hold a current 21-0 at home record.
*In doubles, Tomas Descarrega and Facundo Bermejo are ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA national doubles ranking. The pair leads the Argos with thirteen wins as a doubles team and only one loss. They are a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
*Adam Svennson and Albin Ekenros are 9-4 as the No. 3 pair for the Argos.
*West Florida has three Argos ranked in the ITA national singles ranking. Bermejo is No. 18 with an 11-3 record majority as No. 2. Descarrega ranks No. 39 as the No. 1 singles player with an 8-5 record (4-2 GSC). Mateo Martinez comes in ranked No. 73 with a 9-3 overall record.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
*Valdosta State is No. 2 in the nation as they hold a perfect 13-0 record and 8-0 GSC record on the 2023 season. The Blazers are seated No. 1 in the GSC standings.
*Three Blazers are ranked in the ITA singles rankings with Luca Mack ranked No. 2, Christian Wedel as No. 65, and Rodrigo Carvalho as No. 70. Mack is undefeated in singles on the season with an 11-0, 8-0 GSC record from the No. 1 position.
*Wedel holds a 12-1 overall record and 8-0 record in conference play as No. 4. Carvalho is 10-1, 6-1 GSC majority from the No. 2 position.
*Mack and Carvalho lead the Blazers in doubles with a 12-1 record as the No. 1 pair. The doubles team is No. 19 in the country.

UWF VS. VSU HISTORY
*This will be the 32nd meeting between these two squads with the first match being in 2005. UWF holds the overall series record 23-16 over the Blazers.
*In their last match, the Argos won 4-3 to advance to the NCAA South Regional Championships last May.
