BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UWF standout Per Ekelund was named the Gulf South Conference Men's Golf Freshman of the Week by the league on Thursday.
 
Ekelund was the top individual finisher for UWF at the Las Vegas Desert Classic earlier this week, placing 12th with a 70-70-71=211. The Vellinge, Sweden product made 12 birdies and 36 pars in the 54-hole event.
 
The solid results continued a strong Spring season following his 15th-place, 221 last month at the Matlock Collegiate Classic in Lakeland, Florida.
 
Ekelund now has a 72.0 stroke average over six rounds with his last four at par or better. Additionally, all six of his scores have been used in the daily team score for the Argonauts.
