VALDOSTA, Ga. – The 14th-ranked UWF men's golf team posted the low round each day en route to winning the 2024 Gulf South Conference Championship at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club on Wednesday.
The 5-over-par 896 total secured the 20th GSC crown for the Argos and the 122nd overall conference title for the university.
The week was highlighted with freshman Per Ekelund claiming the individual title with a 72-70-74=216 even par effort. He became the first rookie to win the conference since 2008 when Tobias Rosendahl led the Blue and Green to the team title in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He is the 17th medalist from UWF and fourth-consecutive following Elias Haavisto's league-record three-straight from 2021-23.
Sophomore Cooper Tendick was dialed-in all week and showed it on Wednesday, making seven birdies on his way to his second 67 of the week. He also shot a 67 on Monday and was disqualified from Tuesday's round for committing a rules violation. Ekelund and Tendick led the field with 12 birdies each.
Junior Fabian Wennerlof tied for tenth place with three-consecutive rounds of 74 for a 222 total. Freshman TJ Thompson tied for 23rd at 69-77-83=229.
Sophomore Eddie Lee and graduate student Nico Lang both played this week, with Lee shooting rounds of 76 and 75 in the second and third, respectively, following Lang's 82 on Monday.
No. 9 Lee entered the week as the top seed but finished 13 shots behind UWF with an 882 score. Union took third at 884.
The team title is the fifth for UWF at Kinderlou, joining the four Southeastern Collegiate tournaments in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2017.
The NCAA Regional selections will be announced on Friday, Apr. 26 on ncaa.com. The NCAA South Super Regional Championship will be May 9-11 at Chattahoochee Country Club in Gainesville, Georgia.
