PENSACOLA, Fla. – A day following the nationally publicized eclipse across much of North America, mother nature served up 20-30 mile per hour winds in northwest Florida, causing some big numbers in the final round of the Argonaut Invitational on Tuesday.
The No. 17 UWF Argonauts shot 4-over-par 292 to finish in fourth place with a 861, 3-under-par total. No. 3 Georgia Southwestern mastered the elements with a 285 score to win the 15-team event by six shots with n 848 total. It was the Hurricanes first win in Pensacola and second-straight this season.
No. 1 North Georgia was second at 854 and No. 5 Oklahoma Christian was third at 857.
Leading the UWF individually was junior
Fabian Wennerlof and freshman
Per Ekelund. Wennerlof was one of just two players to play all three rounds in red numbers, finishing with a 7-under-par 68-71-70=209 and a runner-up performance. Ekelund ended his 54-hole trip in a tie for fourth place at 66-70-76=212.
Sophomore
Eddie Lee was the top finisher on UWF's 'B' team, collecting a top 10 finish with 68-71-74=213. The Fort Walton Beach, Florida product established career lows for single round, 36-hole and 54-hole scoring.
Other Argos with strong play this week included junior
Mason Minkel who tied for 17th at 72-74-70=216, matching his best 3-round score this season, and sophomore
Jack Burbee who also had a season-best tourney, recording a 67-76-75=218.
TJ Thompson,
Max Page,
Nicolas Rubio and
Ethan Unverzagt all tied for 41st at 222.
GSW's Payne Sells used a final round 70 to claim individual medalist honors with a 9-under-par 207 total.
UWF will now turn its attention to preparing for the Gulf South Conference Championship. That event will be held in Valdosta, Georgia at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, April 22-24.
