West Florida Takes Both Games of Twinbill Against Christian Brothers

Argos shut out Bucs 5-0 in game one, ride explosive hitting for 8-5 win in game two.

PENSACOLA, Fla. –  A road series turned home series started off in a great way for West Florida Softball (8-6, 3-2) as the Argos claimed the first two games of their series against the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (6-8, 0-5) in a Saturday doubleheader.

The Argos blanked the Bucs 5-0 to win game one, scoring all five runs in the seventh inning. In game 2, UWF got out to a sizeable lead early and held off a CBU comeback to win 8-5 and to take both games of the doubleheader.

Haley Guffey (4-3) recorded her first full shutout of the season in game 1, as she only earned an appearance in five innings of play in UWF's shutout win over Barry. She allowed just one walk and added four strikeouts to her season total during game 1. Her 1.98 ERA is 8th in the GSC.

The Argo bats started the day off quiet and then exploded during the second half of the afternoon. UWF recorded a season-high 15 hits during game 2, passing the 12 they hit against Lake Erie on Feb 8. Two more Argos hit home runs to add to the GSC leading total of 14 on the season. Bella Holliday hit her first of the season and Nicole Mergen launched her third.

Freshman Angelia Discenza had a prolific day at the plate, batting .500 with a double, a triple, three RBI, a stolen base and two walks. She also recorded a sacrifice flyout and a sacrifice bunt, making use of every at bat she had Saturday.

Game 1 - UWF 5, Christian Brothers 0

The Argos were set as the visiting team at home due to the series still being designated a home series for CBU. UWF went up to bat first and found no luck for the majority of the game.

Guffey got her seventh start of the season in the circle and stifled the Bucs for all seven innings. Guffey helped the Argos leave six runners on base for CBU in the shutout without run support for most of the game.

Christian Brothers' Gabby Dickerson also held UWF in check for six innings, but the Argos found their stride in the seventh. Mergen broke the Argos quiet afternoon at the plate with a bomb to left field, scoring Emma Brice in the process, 2-0.

Kyndal Cornelius tripled and scored Brett Watson who was pinch running for Nevaeh Hayes. Cornelius scored on a Guerriero RBI single to shortstop, and she was brought home on Discenza's flyout.

CBU stopped the bleeding at 5-0 but only managed one runner aboard in the bottom of the seventh before Guffey closed the door and secured the game 1 win.

Game 2 - UWF 8, Christian Brothers 5

Hannah Harper (4-1) got the start in game two and kept the Bucs quiet for the first several innings. The Argos provided run support early, going up 3-0 in the first two innings on an Erin Moon RBI single and a Discenza 2-RBI double. Christian Brothers hit an RBI double in the 3rd to bring it to 3-1, but the Argos owned innings four and five, adding five more runs on a 2-RBI single from Hannah Harper and an RBI single from Emma Brice. In the fifth Holliday homered and a wild pitch scored Discenza.

With the score 8-1, Christian Brothers found life and began a slow push back. An RBI groundout scored one for the Bucs in the fifth, and they added four more runs in the sixth on an RBI double, an RBI single, and an RBI groundout. The Bucs managed to load the bases with two outs in the seventh, and even had the winning run at the plate but an out at second on a fielder's choice sealed the win for UWF 8-5.
