Argos Dominate Florida Southern Mocs in Lakeland

UWF comes away with two shutout wins in midweek twinbill.

LAKELAND, Fla. – UWF Softball (23-8, 14-4) completed Its two-week road stretch with two resounding wins over the Sunshine State Conference's Florida Southern Mocs (7-26, 2-13) on Tuesday afternoon.

The Argos recorded their seventh run-rule win of the season in game one, capitalizing on four FSC errors to score multiple runs and 10 hits. In game two, Jessie Baughan's sixth inning two-RBI home run provided most of the run relief, but Hannah Harper led the way to a 3-0 shutout. UWF is now riding a six-game win streak and is 9-1 on the road this season.

Gianna Guerriero put on an extra-base hit clinic, hitting two triples in game one and a double in game two. Overall, Guerriero went 4-8 (.500) with three RBI combined in the wins. She and Angelia Discenza now lead the conference with eight and seven triples hit respectively.

Haley Guffey (14-4) earned her sixth shutout of the season in game one, and her second shutout in a row. She allowed just four hits total in the start. The junior from Wewahitchka has not allowed an earned run in her last three starts and improves her season ERA to 2.00.

Harper (9-2) recorded her first shutout of the season in game two and allowed just three hits to go along with three strikeouts in the effort. The junior also went 3-6 with a run at the plate and had four putouts with five assists at first base and in the circle.

UWF 9, FSC 0 / 5 inn.

Both the Argos and Mocs left two on base to begin the game, but Guerriero's first triple of the day managed to score Bella Holliday and Kyndal Cornelius

Up 2-0 in the third, UWF capitalized on a throwing error to score Emma Brice and move Baughan to third. A passed ball then allowed Baughan to run in. Soon after, Guerriero hit her second trip to score Cornelius again. After the dust had settled, the Argos were up 6-0.

Both teams were held to zeroes in the fourth, but UWF clamped down for two more innings defensively and brough in two more runs thanks to an Angelia Discenza RBI single and a throwing error. This put the Argos up 8-0 in run-rule territory. Erin Moon scored Discenza on a RBI single to bring it to 9-0 for good measure. The Mocs went down in order to seal the 9-0 five inning win.

UWF 9, FSC 0 / 5 inn.

Harper started on the mound and only let up one hit in the first three innings. The Argos stranded a few but broke the ice with a couple singles from Harper and Brice. Bret Watson pinch-ran for Harper but was called out at home. Brice managed to score thanks to a Nicole Mergen RBI single.

The fourth and fifth were also scoreless for both teams but Harper again stranded two runners for Florida Southern. Baughan stepped up and crushed a ball to center field to score Brice and add some late insurance runs.

The Mocs went down in order in the sixth and managed one aboard due to an error in the seventh, but Harper shut the door on the final batter for the final out in the bottom of the inning for the second shutout win.
