SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 24 UWF Softball's successful 2025 campaign came to a close in the NCAA DII South Regional against the host Saint Leo University Saturday afternoon, as the 6-Seed Argos fell 1-8 to the 2-Seed Lions.
The Argos scored the first run of the game but the Lions rattled off eight unanswered to win. Auburn Montgomery and Saint Leo will battle it out to advance to a super regional, where they will meet the winner of Barry and Tampa.
The team's 38-17 record is the best since going 54-11 in 2019. Head coach
Ashliegh McLean's postseason record after her seventh season is now 20-13, and 230-107 overall.
UWF's 2025 campaign included a host of awards and accolades, including a GSC Championship, two All-Region players, five All-Conference Players, the GSC Co-Player of the Year and Golden Glove winner, and multiple players of the week awards. The 2025 Argos also also jumped into the national rankings for the first time since May of 2022.
Six seniors celebrated their final season in the blue and green, those being
Gianna Guerriero,
Erin Moon,
Brianna Jennings,
Halie Wetherington,
Maddie Treutlein, and
Cameron Wolfenden. Guerriero and Moon end their careers in the record books in the top 10 in career batting average in program history, with Guerriero finishing at .435 (3
rd) and Moon finishing at .366 (9
th).
UWF 1, Saint Leo 8 – NCAA DII South Regional
UWF started off the game getting out of a bases loaded jam thanks to a tough lineout by
Emma Brice at third base. The Argos started out with a Guerriero leadoff hit in the bottom of the inning, and a Moon RBI to score her.
The Lions tied up the game in the second with a few hits and an error. UWF forced them to leave two on base. The Argos went down in order to end the inning. The Lions took over in the third, scoring two more runs on four singles. Harper subbed in for a starting
Haley Guffey and got the Argos out of the inning only down two.
Both teams went in order from then until the top of the fifth when the Lions got a runner on due to a fielding error. The Argos held them again but went 1-2-3 in the fifth still down 1-3.
The game began to slip away from UWF in the sixth when a couple singles and an a couple errors scored two more for the Lions. A two-out pinch-hit 2-RBI home run made it 7-1 and put the Argos in a dire situation. The Argos managed only a single hit from
Olivia Keith in the sixth. The Lions scored another run on two more hits and a sacrifice.
UWF's
Nicole Mergen singled in the seventh but two straight fielder's choices and a lineout ended the game, sending the Argos home to Pensacola.
