PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The path to a national championship continues.
The UWF men's golf team has advanced to medal match play at the NCAA Division II National Championship after finishing second overall in stroke play. The Argos had a three round combined score of 858 (-6).
On Wednesday, UWF finished two under par as a team for the third round.
TJ Thompson led the way with a 70 (-2) while
Eddie Lee,
Per Ekelund and
Fabian Wennerlof all shot ever par 72's.
Cooper Tendick was two over on the day.
Thompson provided a spark for the team early in his round with a pair of eagles on the front nine. The sophomore eagled holes No. 3 and No. 6 which are both par 5's. Thompson was two under through the front. On the back nine a bogey on No. 14 dropped him to one under, but Thompson birdied No. 18 to close out the round.
Ekelund scrambled for his 72 today which included six birdies, four bogeys and a double. It was the most birdies in a round by anyone on the UWF team this tournament. Ekelund has 13 total birdies this week, which is tied for fourth best in the field.
Wennerlof was three under through nine holes, but a tough 14th hole that ended in a triple bogey brought him back to even.
Lee was honored in the post-round ceremony for being a top 10 individual finisher. The junior was four under for the stroke play portion of the tournament and finished tied for sixth overall.
UWF will now take on St. Mary's (TX) in the first round of match play on Thursday. The teams will tee off on Hole No. 1 at 7:30 a.m. Lee will start things off followed by Ekelund, Wennerlof, Tendick and then Thompson.
Match play consists of head-to-head pairings between two teams. The player to complete a hole with the fewest strokes will win that hole. To win the match a player must be up more holes on their opponent than there are holes remaining.
