PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – One match remains between the Argos and the goal they had all season: win a national championship.
UWF began the day by taking care of business against St. Mary's (TX). The Argos won 5-0 over SMU in the medal match play format. Each player won by at least three strokes.
Cooper Tendick and
TJ Thompson both had the lowest scores for the team with Tendick shooting 68 (-4) and Thompson shooting 70 (-2). The win allowed the Argos to advance on to face Wingate in the national semifinal match.
The win over Wingate came in entertaining fashion with deciding results happening on the No. 18 green.
Fabian Wennerlof and Thompson came up huge for the Argos in the final few holes.
With the match tied at 2.5 to 2.5 Wennerlof was down two strokes to his opponent Cole Rouse heading into the hole No. 16. But Wennerlof wouldn't go out without a fight. The senior gained ground with a par on No. 16 while Rouse bogeyed the hole. On No. 17 both players parred. On No. 18, Wennerlof's approach shot went into the bunker on the right side of the green, but his bunker shot out was put within five feet leaving him a putt to win the hole. Rouse parred the hole and Wennerlof drained his birdie putt to win the hole and tie the match giving the Argos a 3-2 advantage.
Thompson held a five-stroke lead on the front nine, but opponent Jordan Hyland found his way back in and took a one stroke lead on hole No. 14. Thompson tied things up with a birdie on par 3 No. 15. Both players stayed tied through holes No. 16 and 17. On the final hole Thompson hit a birdie putt to win the hole and officially secure the Argos a win, 3.5-1.5.
Tendick won his match by five strokes and
Per Ekelund won his match by 10 strokes.
Due to a long weather delay midway through the match the other semifinal match was unable to finish due to darkness. The Argos will not know who their final matchup will be against until the winner of Colorado Christian and North Georgia match finishes on Friday morning. Those teams will finish their rounds starting at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Following the conclusion of the other match the Argos and the winner will complete their pairings and begin the national championship match.
