PENSACOLA, Fla. — West Florida faced Lee University in a doubleheader on Saturday at Jim Spooner Field, suffering losses in both games with final scores of 9–4 and 3–1.
Game 1
West Florida fell to Lee with a 9–4 defeat. Despite a fifth-inning rally that brought in three runs, the Argonauts were unable to overcome Lee's four-run eighth inning. Lee scored first in the second inning with an error by the Argos and a single that brought in the run.
In the fifth, Lee extended its lead with a two-RBI single and a two-RBI triple, putting the score at 5-0. West Florida responded in the bottom half with three runs.
Zack Stokes scored after being hit by a pitch, followed by an RBI single from
Andrew Walton that brought home
Zack DeJesus.
William Lybrook added another RBI single, and
Tyler Brobst reached on a fielding error, allowing Walton to score, narrowing the gap to 5-3.
However, in the eighth inning, Lee expanded its lead further with four runs. Another two-RBI single and a few RBI singles increased the margin to 9-3. The Argonauts were unable to score in response.
Gann Nobles doubled in the ninth inning and later scored on a Stokes double, bringing the final score to 9–4.
Tucker Ricks started for West Florida, pitching 5 innings with 5 earned runs on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.
Michael Vice provided relief, pitching 1 inning, allowing 1 hit, and striking out 2 batters.
Eli Lamb contributed 1.2 innings, giving up 3 earned runs, while striking out 3.
Blake Thomas and
Zach Nelson finished the game, with Nelson striking out 1 in his 1 inning of work, allowing no earned runs.
Game 2
The Argonauts managed three hits and one run, while the Flames secured victory with four hits and three runs. UWF opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when
Trent Kelly singled to center field, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
William Lybrook.
Peyton Martin grounded out to second base, bringing Kelly home for the game's first run, leading 1–0 after two innings.
Lee tied the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, Lee took the lead with a double to right field, driving in two runs after two walks put runners on base, giving the Flames a 3–1 advantage.
Despite some opportunities, West Florida was unable to score further, and Lee maintained its lead, securing the win with a final score of 3–1.
Elijah Roberts pitched 4.2 innings for West Florida, allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits while striking out 4 batters.
Christian Pencek pitched 1.1 innings, giving up 1 hit and inducing a ground double play, with no runs scored against him.
Micky Scheetz completed 1 inning of relief, striking out 2 batters and allowing no hits.
Looking ahead, the Argonauts will travel to face Columbus State University on Tuesday, April 7 at 5 p.m. in Columbus, Georgia.
