COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Argos added another midweek victory, 6-2, over Columbus State on Wednesday.
West Florida opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by
Gustavo Mendez, bringing home
Zack Stokes. Columbus State was held scoreless in the bottom half, making it 1–0 after one inning.
In the third inning, West Florida added another run as
Trent Kelly's sacrifice fly allowed Stokes to score again. Columbus State responded in the same inning adding a run of their own and then tied it up at 2-2 in the fourth.
West Florida regained the lead in the sixth inning with a sacrifice bunt by
Ethan Babcock allowed Mendez to score. The Argos extended their lead in the seventh inning with an RBI single from Kelly, scoring
Alex Urias.
In the eighth inning, UWF secured its advantage with a double by
Hudson Spencer, scoring
Greg Pettay. Urias followed with an RBI single, bringing in Spencer. Despite a single in the ninth inning, Columbus State couldn't mount a comeback. West Florida secured a 6–2 victory.
Garrett Brewer started on the mound for West Florida, pitching 4 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs with 1 earned run, while issuing 1 walk.
Christian Pencek followed with a solid performance, pitching 4 innings and surrendering just 2 hits, striking out 2 batters, and securing the win to improve his record to 3–1.
Micky Scheetz closed the game, delivering 1 inning of relief, giving up 1 hit on 6 pitches.
The Argonauts will travel to Livingston, Alabama, for a Friday matchup to begin the weekend series against the University of West Alabama. The game is set for 6 p.m.
