No. 1 Lady Argos Dominant in 6-0 Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The top ranked University of West Florida women’s soccer team handed Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers University a 6-0 shutout loss on a cold and soggy Saturday afternoon.  The Argo’s Shakira Duncan (Kingston, Jamaica/Darton College) led the attack for West Florida, scoring the game’s first three goals on her way to her first hat trick of the season.

Battling tough conditions throughout the match, the offense got it going in the 22nd minute. Shaneka Gordon (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore) connected with Duncan on a cross from the right corner for the first goal of the match and a 1-0 Argo lead. Less than a minute later Duncan would fire one in from the 18 line on a nice pass from Marcela Franco (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Visconde de Porto Seguro) in the left corner.

West Florida kept the pressure on the Bucs defense, constantly pushing the ball forward. Once again Gordon and Duncan connected with each other in the 39th minute to put the Argos on top 3-0.  Pushing down the right sideline Gordon served a ball into the middle which found the head of Duncan who flicked it past keeper Libby Hake.

Finishing out the scoring in the first half was Gordon. She received a cross inside from Dernelle Mascall (Basse terre, Moruga, Trinidad/Mobile) for the one touch to the back of the net.

Just after the start of the second half the Gordon twins found each other for the fifth goal of the match. Shaneka sent a pass to the middle for her sister Shameka Gordon (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore), who put it in to the near post.

Mascall ended the offensive attack for the Argos in the 51st minute when she fired one in off a deflection off Bucs keeper Hake.

In the match the Lady Argos fired off 25 shots while limiting the Bucs to just two shots. West Florida also held the advantage in corner kicks by a count of 14-1.
