UWF women's soccer alumni compete professionally in Europe

GRINDAVÍK, Iceland – While the majority of NCAA student-athletes will not continue their sport professionally after graduation, several University of West Florida women’s soccer alumni are still lacing up their cleats and competing at the highest professional levels all around the world. This past weekend, a trio of former UWF soccer student-athletes competed against each other professionally in Grindavík, Iceland. Former West Florida teammates Shakira Duncan and Tina Murray (KR Reykjavík) faced fellow UWF alumnus Dernelle Mascall (Grindavík) on Friday, July 12.

Mascall came up big for Grindavík in the 2-1 home win, scoring both goals to lead her team to their fourth consecutive victory. Mascall scored her first goal from six yards out in the 35th minute and then scored again in the second half in 71st minute on a shot curled around the keeper from 18 yards out.

West Florida was represented well for KR Reykjaví as well, as Shakira Duncan got the assist on Tina Murray’s goal in the 90th minute to record the team’s lone goal in stoppage time.

“I think it speaks volumes about the quality of our program and that after graduation many of our players still have the opportunity to play soccer professionally all around the world,” UWF head coach Joe Bartlinksi said. “Not only are they playing professionally but they are contributing to their teams and are making big impacts.”
