PENSACOLA, Fla. – Kyle Hamner pulled off the late-inning heroics for the University of West Florida baseball team on Sunday afternoon, hitting a walk off single in the bottom of the 11th to score Ladeavon Matthews and preserve a 3-2 win over Valdosta State at Jim Spooner Field.

Anthony Mazzurco got his first career start as a member of the program and impressed from the very beginning, throwing five innings and only allowing four hits. In the top of the fifth, Mazzurco got into a bit of trouble, allowing two Blazer runners to reach, but recovered nicely by getting VSU's leadoff hitter Scott Matthews to fly out to right field to end the threat.

West Florida (8-6, 4-2 GSC) broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the fifth, as Alex Greene singled up the middle to score Hamner.

Valdosta State (11-5, 4-2 GSC) responded in the sixth and seventh, tacking on a run in each inning. UWF responded immediately in the bottom of the seventh, as Michael Savas recorded his second hit of the day to knot the score at 2-2 and bring in Justin Ambrosino.

Brandon Nagem made his first career relief appearance in the effort, throwing the sixth and seventh innings and allowing just one hit and one run.

Nagem faced a jam in the sixth, having runners on first and second after a walk to Blazer second basemen Chipper Andzel, but recorded back-to-back strikeouts to limit the damage done by the VSU offense.

Both UWF and VSU would go scoreless in the eighth and ninth, largely in thanks to an impressive appearance from Steven McClellan who threw three innings of shutout relief and only surrendered two hits while striking out three.

McClellan was able to record a big strikeout of his own to end the ninth, as the Blazers had a two-man on threat after a lead off single and a walk. McClellan, who now has nine innings pitched over five relief appearances, preserved his 0.00 ERA on the season while holding opposing hitters to a .226 batting average.

Sean Kennedy has been lights out for the Argonauts bullpen the past couple weeks, and his performance against VSU on Sunday was no different as the Virginia native struck out the side in order in the top half of the 11th inning. Kennedy has now struck out the last six batters he has faced, while fanning nine of the last 14 hitters he has opposed.

While offense was limited on both sides of Sunday's ballgame, bright spots in the Argo lineup included Hamner, who went 3-for-5 with the game-winning RBI, Greene, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and Jean Figueroa, who went 2-for-5 with a double down the right field line in the eighth inning. Savas posted a 2-for-3 performance after coming in as a defensive substitution in the fifth inning.

UWF baseball sees action again on Wednesday, as the Argonauts host Stillman for a 4:00 p.m. start. Next weekend the Argos travel to Florence, Alabama to take on first place North Alabama for a three-game conference series.
