MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The UWF women's golf team shot an opening round 312 at the Gulf South Conference Championship on The Schoolmaster Course at The Shoals Sunday.
The Argonauts are in fourth place in the 8-team field. Lee posted the only sub-300 score with a 299 for a 2-stroke lead on Shorter. West Alabama is in third at 309. West Georgia is three back of UWF at 315.
UWF opened the day at 4-over-par after four holes, but struggled to make par over the next five, slipping to fifth place at plus-16 at the turn. The squad climbed one spot on the back nine while playing it at 8-over-par.
"We just played poor today," UWF head coach
Bryan Clarke said. "We 3-putted a bunch and didn't play up to our potential. I just want to chalk it up to a bad day. We just have to try to make some up tomorrow and try to give ourselves a chance for Tuesday. We can't give up anymore ground to the leaders"
UWF had four players in the top 20 and three record scores in the 70s, led by
Johanna Nevalainen's 76. The freshman birdied the final three holes of the front nine to turn at 1-over-par before bogeys at 10, 15 and 18 pushed her into a 5-way tie for seventh.
Senior
Daisy-May Kenny signed for a 77 and is in 12th place, while junior
Lauren Lamm is a shot back at 78 and in a 4-way tie for 13th.
Sophomore
Paloma Vaccaro finished with an 81. She also had trouble making par on the front nine, playing it at 8-over-par before touring the final nine at 1-over-par. Senior
Elin Olsson is tied for 27th after an 86 on Sunday.
UWF will be paired with Union and West Georgia in Monday's second round. The first tee time for that grouping will start at 8:45 a.m.
