PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 8 UWF women's golf team shot a 305 after the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Region 2 Championship at Marcus Pointe Golf Club Monday.
Â
UWF is in sixth place following its 17-over-par effort. The Argonauts are 10 shots back of the opening round leader, No. 5 Nova Southeastern. The Sharks 295 leads seventh-ranked Saint Leo (296) by a shot, with No. 1 Rollins in third at 297, No. 3 Florida Tech at 298 and No. 4 Montevallo at 302.
Â
The Argos were playing well in the opening part of the round, mixing in five birdies over their first five holes and were sitting in second place at 2-over thru six. But unfortunately, the squad made just three birdies in the final 10 holes and slipped to sixth by the end of the round.
Â
"We played well early and got through the tough stretch of the golf course pretty good," UWF head coach
Bryan Clarke said. "But for whatever reason, we struggled through the middle holes and lost quite a bit of ground. That being said, we were behind the eight ball (in conference) and came back, but we can't make any silly mistakes the next two days. We need to focus on ourselves and try to get a few back tomorrow and put ourselves in position to qualify (for nationals)."
Junior
Lauren Lamm was the team's top finisher, posting a 75 despite bogeying her final two holes. Lamm is tied for 10th place.
Â
Senior
Elin Olsson fought through a triple bogey on No. 6 and played 1-over-par – including 10-consecutive pars to end the round – for a 76. She sits in a tie for 19th.
Â
Sophomore
Paloma Vaccaro and freshman
Johanna Nevalainen signed for matching 77s and are tied for 28th place. Senior
Daisy-May Kenny is in 35th place after posting a 78.
Â
Tuesday's second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Central time with the UWF players going off No. 1 with Florida Tech and Montevallo.
Â
The top three teams and the top three student-athletes not with a team from each of the four regionals (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 18-21, at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. The finals will be hosted by Metro State as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival.
