BOX SCORE
Tampa, Fla. – With both teams sleep deprived and hungry for a victory, the Nova Southeastern University Sharks were able to hold off the University of West Florida baseball team, 6-4, on a game originally scheduled for Friday night that was completed on Saturday morning.
Due to inclement weather in the area last night, the teams were forced to postpone the remainder of the game at 11:45 p.m. With the score tied at 3-3 the Argos and Sharks were scheduled to complete the remaining five scheduled innings just a little over 10 hours later.
"It is what it is, you can't control the weather," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "I thought the energy of our team was fine and we put nine hits total on the board but we're not hitting enough. We kind of went back to what we were doing in the conference tournament."
After UWF was held scoreless in its first frame of the day, the Sharks started its Saturday morning with a long ball from Andres Visbal.
Sean Kennedy, who started on the mound today for the Argonauts, rebounded after the homer by retiring his next nine batters consecutively.
With a one-run lead, Nova Southeastern added some breathing room via a two-run eighth inning to stretch the lead to 6-3.
West Florida brought the game-winning run up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, as a
Kyle Hamner RBI single pushed the score to 6-4. With
Nic Strasser on second and pinch runner
Matt Sullivan on first,
John Price was up as the game-winning run before Nova Southeastern closer Devin Raferty recorded his South Region-best 11
th save of the year.
No. 2-seeded UWF will now play later today in an elimination game against No. 5-seeded Lynn.
"We just got to regroup," said Jeffcoat. "I expect our guys to have some fight here against Lynn after we go back to the hotel and cool off."
Alex Greene,
Justin Ambrosino and Hamner led the team with two hits each.
Jarrod Petree fired 1.2 innings of two-hit relief on the mound for the Argonauts.
Game time between UWF and Lynn is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET, however it is expected to be delayed by the West Georgia – Tampa game by at least an hour to hour and a half. Stay tuned with UWF Athletics on Twitter @GoArgos for updates.
