BOX SCORE
Tampa, Fla. –
Jimmy Redovian,
Nic Strasser and
Kyle Hamner combined for nine of the University of West Florida baseball team's 16 hits to provide the offense for UWF's 11-5 win over No. 5 seeded Lynn in an elimination game in the NCAA Division II South Regional.
"I'm real proud of their fight," head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "Got a great start from (Brandon) Nagem, and we started swinging the bats a little bit again while taking advantage of a few miscues by Lynn."
In addition to the strong individual offensive performances,
Brandon Nagem turned in another strong postseason performance with 5.1 innings pitched, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. Only twice in Nagem's outing did the lefty allow multiple runners on base.
"It felt good to go out there," said Nagem. "I'm finally getting the confidence back that I had last year. It was tough at first, but once we got back up to five runs I went out there a lot more comfortable."
West Florida (36-16) got the offense rolling early; beginning with an RBI single from
Justin Ambrosino after
Nic Strasser was able to reach third base on an error. Redovian would provide the Argos' next two runs with an RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the fourth. Two batters after Redovian's double, Strasser hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season over the left field fence to give West Florida a 5-1 lead.
Jarrod Petree, who made his second outing of the day, struck out the only two batters he faced when coming in relief in a one out, two-man on jam. A trio of southpaws finished the game, as
Anthony Mazzurco,
Cole Crowder and
Troy Brown combined to pitch the final three innings.
Lynn (29-23) chipped away in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, but UWF responded with a pair of sac flies from
Robert Lopez and
Alex Greene while Redovian stayed hot with his third hit and RBI of the game with a single. To cap the scoring in the five-run, seven-hit seventh inning, Strasser and
Jean Figueroa each singled to left to bring in another three runs.
With the score at 10-3,
Michael Savas hit a no-doubt, solo homer over the left field wall for his first career home run with the Argonauts.
Lynn added two runs in the eighth, but it proved to be too little, too late as the Argonauts prevailed and grabbed the eventual 11-5 win.
"I'm just proud of the guys getting back into it, staying awake and being ready to go," said Redovian. "At this point it's survive and advance. It's win or go home and we're just putting that attitude towards the offense and the defense."
Redovian posted a 3-for-5 showing with two runs scored and three RBI from the nine spot in the lineup.
Kyle Hamner also went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, while Strasser went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI. Ambrosino posted a 2-for-5 game with an RBI.
West Florida will play in another elimination game tomorrow against West Georgia at noon.
Walker O'Connor is expected to start for the Argonauts.
