WEDNESDAY PAIRINGS (FINAL ROUND)
PENSACOLA, Fla. –Â
Paloma Vaccaro fired a career-best 67 to help the No. 8 UWF women's golf team climb into fourth place at the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 Championship at Marcus Pointe Golf Club Tuesday.
Â
Vaccaro shot up the individual leaderboard from 25th into the second-place spot following a career-best round of 67. The sophomore from Asuncion, Paraguay scored with five birdies and zero bogeys, and had things really rolling on the back nine. She had three birdies after the turn along with three missed birdie attempts on the back nine, including a lip-out on No. 17.
Â
"I was real consistent in hitting every fairway and all but two greens today," said Vaccaro, who matched her previous career-low set in the 2012 South American Amateur in Columbia. "My coach told me to go out and have fun and that's what I did."
Â
"She didn't do anything special," UWF head coach
Bryan Clarke said. "She took what the golf course gave her and then she capitalized on it."
Â
Vaccaro's round was part of a 297 for the Argonauts, who moved up two spots into fourth at 602, but still trail third-place and top-ranked Rollins by seven shots. Even with that deficit – ironically, the same size that UWF overcame two weeks ago to win the conference title on the final day – Clarke feels confident heading into the final round.
Â
"We need to go play our game and play well," he said. "We just need to be patient and hit fairways and greens. The good thing is we are first out, which gives us a chance to possibly put some pressure on the other teams and show them we have come to play."
Â
Junior
Lauren Lamm and senior
Elin Olsson had good days for Clarke's squad Tuesday. Both players had five bogeys in their round before birdieing the par 3, 15th to close with a 76. Lamm is now tied for 16th at 151 and Olsson is a spot back with a 152 total.
Â
Freshman
Johanna Nevalainen is tied for 30th at 155 following a 78, while senior
Daisy-May Kenny is tied for 56th at 161.
Â
In the team race, the field is chasing No. 5 Nova Southeastern, who posted its second-consecutive 295 and holds a 4-shot lead with a 590. No. 7 Saint Leo is in second at 594 after it made a big surge late in the round, playing in the final five holes at 4-under-par.
Â
The top three teams and the top three student-athletes not with a team from each of the four regionals will advance to the finals May 18-21, at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. The finals will be hosted by Metro State as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival.
Â
UWF is attempting to qualify for the national tournament for the first time in program history.
Â
Wednesday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Central time with players off Nos. 1 and 10. UWF will be paired with Florida Tech and Montevallo, starting on No. 1 from 8:30-9:10 a.m.
