PENSACOLA, Fla. - Coming off a strong 2016-17 season that saw the UWF men's team win its fourth NCAA Division II National Championship and the women's team make another deep run at nationals, both squads will open the Fall 2017 schedule at the Oracle/ITA South Region Championship in Valdosta, Ga.
Valdosta State will host the four-day tournament, beginning Friday, September 22 at the VSU Tennis Courts and Valdosta's McKey Park. Individuals from 15 teams across the South Region are set to compete.
Competing on the men's side is senior
Alfonso Castellano, juniors
Nicolas Lecoutre, and
Lucas Sanchez, and sophomores
Serdar Bojadjiev (seeded No. 7 in singles),
Juan Motta,
Nicholas Springer (seeded No. 8 in doubles with Bojadjiev), and
Robin Rafaitin. A total of 75 players are in the singles draw and 35 pairs are in the doubles draw.
The six women's competitors include seniors
Paula Coyos (seeded No. 5 in singles),
Valeria Mantilla, and
Samantha Echevarria, juniors
Heather Mixon and
Diana Vlad and sophomore
Jordana Lujan (seeded No. 4 in doubles with Coyos). The women's side of the tournament features 72 singles competitors and 36 doubles tandems.
Last year, UWF's
Pedro Dumont and
Alex Peyrot won the region doubles title and went on to claim the Oracle/ITA Division II National Championship two weeks later in Surprise, Ariz.
