RESULTS THROUGH 36 HOLES
LAKELAND, Fla. – The 18th-ranked UWF women's golf team turned in one of the top scores in program history and
Solange Gomez is in first place after the first two rounds of the Lady Moc Golf Classic at Grasslands Golf & Country Club Monday.
Â
In the morning round, the Argonauts recorded the 16th-lowest team score in UWF history with an 8-over-par 296 to sit in second place. They slipped to sixth place after a 303 in the afternoon round put their 36-hole score at 599. That is the ninth-best 36-hole score in the school record book.
"I am really proud of how the team played today," UWF head coach
Kristen Dorsey said. "We had a ton of positive things happen that I think we can continue to build on."
Â
Gomez was dialed in all day, making a team-high eight birdies on her way to a 72-68=140 score and a two-stroke lead. After birdieing her 16th and 17th holes for the 72, she came back to post six birdies and two bogeys in the second round for a tournament and career-low 68. The 68 by the sophomore from Quito, Ecuador is tied for the fourth-lowest single round in UWF history and the 140 36-hole score is the second-best by an Argonaut.
Â
"From tee to green, Solange was phenomenal," Dorsey added. "I was really proud of her calm demeanor and nothing seemed to shake her today."
Â
Sophomore
Payton Pacheco is tied for 25th after a 75-77=152 finish. Freshman
Sophie Shrader is a shot back at 75-79=154 and tied for 33rd. Shrader had an eagle on the 479-yard, par-5 second hole in the afternoon round for her first eagle at UWF. It was one of just four in the either round on Monday.
Â
Senior
Kelie Kan opened with a season-low 74 before an 81 put her tied for 35th at 155. Junior
Ronja Taipale completed the day in 42nd place with a 78-79=157 total.Â
Third-ranked Limestone is in first place at 587, followed by ninth-ranked Lynn a shot back. No. 14 Florida Southern is third at 593, with No. 20 Anderson and No. 5 Nova Southeastern just ahead of UWF at 596 and 598, respectively.
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. The Argos will be playing with Anderson and Nova Southeastern, and starting on holes 4-6.
