INDIANAPOLIS – The University of West Florida has been selected to host the 2021 NCAA Division II Baseball South Region Tournament at Jim Spooner Field in an announcement made by the NCAA Monday.
The facility will host the 6-team, double-elimination format May 27-30 with three games each day and 1-2 games on the final day.
The NCAA Division II Championships Committee has chosen predetermined regional sites for the 2021 NCAA Division II Championships. Due to the health and safety protocols, the organization will conduct all NCAA championship competition at predetermined sites. The committee believes the sites and hosts chosen will provide an exceptional and safe experience for all participants.
Institutions were able to put in their bid to host and the NCAA made their determination based on those bids.
This will mark the second time that an NCAA regional has been contested at UWF. The school previously hosted the event in 2011 as the region's top seed. UWF defeated Barry in the region tourney that year and advanced to the NCAA Championship where the Argonauts won the national championship.
The Spoon, which has served as the home field for UWF baseball since the program's inception in 1981, has also recently hosted the 2016 Gulf South Conference Championship.
Across all sports, UWF has successfully bid to host NCAA postseason competitions in men's & women's cross country, field hockey, women's golf, men's & women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball in the past 15 years.
The NCAA brackets will be announced on Sunday, May 23 at 9 p.m. CDT on
ncaa.com. With reduced field size and the consolidation of regional and super regional play this year, the bracket in Pensacola will be a 6-team, double elimination setup. The regional winner will advance to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, North Carolina, June 5-12.
