INNISBROOK, Fla. – Led by an individual medalist finish from senior Felipe Garces, the third-ranked UWF men's golf team finished second at the Copperhead Championship at Innisbrook on Tuesday.
UWF was in first place at 1-under-par following Monday's first two rounds, but slipped to second late in the final round where it shot 288 and ended the event at 855, 3-over-par. Second-ranked Lee won the tournament by two shots at 853.
Garces tied for first with a 69-67-71=207 with CSU Pueblo's Matt Millar. Millar won the title on the first playoff hole. Garces played the par 3s at 3-under for the week, making three birdies and 12 pars to lead the 75-player field. He has a 69.67 stroke average through nine rounds this fall.
Junior Elias Haavisto tied for fifth overall, finishing with a 72-72-68=211. His 3-under round on Tuesday was the lowest on the course and put him into the top five for the third-consecutive tournament.
Senior Patrick Poate also turned in a top 10 performance, tying for eighth place at 69-72-73=214, giving him his second-lowest 54-hole score in his college career.
Senior Cameron Bonner and freshman Jack Burbee ended the 54-hole event at 226 and 234, respectively.
Redshirt freshman Max Page was competing as an individual and tied for fifth, turning in a career-low 70-69-72=211.
The Argos have finished first or second in all three tournaments this season. They will conclude the fall portion of their schedule at The Citrus Intercollegiate, October 31-November 1 at Champions Gate CC in Orlando.
