PENSACOLA, Fla.- In their two last regular season matches of the season, the No. 15 West Florida men's soccer team gears up to take on Delta State on Friday and Mississippi college on Sunday at home. Tipoff for Friday is set for 5 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
ABOUT UWF
The Argos (8-2-3, 5-0-3 GSC) enter these matchups as the No. 1 team in Gulf South Conference standings as they have not lost a single game to a GSC opponent this season. West Florida jumped up to No. 15 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll released on Oct. 18.
UWF mostly recently defeated Spring Hill 4-1 on Oct. 15 with four different Argos tallying a goal. Jaime Guillen had his first touch and goal against the Badgers to put the Argos on the board first.
West Florida only has two losses this season to Saint Leo and Rollins. Sophomore
Kainan Dos Santos leads the conference in shots with 44. The Brazilian native has seven goals, four assists, 18 points, and 44 shots as he leads the Argos.
Throughout the season, the Argos have had multiple threats offensively including
Jack Patching,
Keegan Ancelin, and
Kendrick Hernandez, who are all tied with four goals on the season.
The Argonaut backline compiled of defenders Eduardo Quieroz,
Fynn Geigle,
Lucas Barankiewicz, and goalkeeper
Nicolas Meckien. Freshman Meckien has recorded 17 saves on the season with 882 minutes and seven goals allowed.
ABOUT DSU
The Statesmen (3-5-4, 2-4-2 GSC) enter this match as the No. 9 team in the GSC standings. DSU has two wins against GSC opponents, Shorter and Union. Last year in the GSC Tournament, Delta State lost to Mississippi College 2-0 at the beginning of November to conclude the 2021 season.
The Statesmen are 1-3-2 at home and 2-2-2 on the road. Andy Robertson is at the helm of the Delta State men's soccer team, and he is in his ninth year.
UWF vs. DSU History
West Florida is 14-3 against the Statesmen with their most recent win last season. Ancelin and Dos Santos had one goal apiece to increase the lead 2-1 against DSU. The Argos are on a four-game win streak against the Statesmen.
ABOUT MC
Mississippi College (9-2-2, 5-2-2 GSC) are No. 4 in the GSC standings. Forward Noah Wagner leads the conference in goals with nine. The senior forward leads the team in goals (9), points (18), and shots (35). Josh Davies has been a key asset to this Choctaws as he was second team All-GSC and third team All-South Region last season. He scored twice in MC's 4-2 win over Lee. He scored in the 14th minute to put MC ahead early, and then he scored in the 90th minute to put the match away.
Freshman Felix Ewald has been named GSC Freshman of the Week twice this season (9/6, 9/20). Ewald scored in MC's win over Lee. He also picked up an assist in the Choctaws win over Shorter. Another freshman Santiago Dominquez Ochoa earned GSC Freshman of the Week (9/27). In his first collegiate appearance against West Alabama, Dominguez made five crucial saves for the Choctaws to tie the match 1-1.
UWF vs. MC History
The overall record between these two teams is 3-4-1 with the Argos claiming the last victory in 2021. After a strong defensive effort by the Argos, West Florida escaped with a 1-0 win over the Choctaws. The lone goal was scored by Dos Santos in the 11
th minute.
On Friday, the first 100 students will receive free pizza with a valid nautilus card. Tickets will be $5 for general admission and $3 for senior/military. UWF students will be able to attend for free with a valid nautilus card.
