FINAL RESULTS
Â
MOBILE, Ala. – UWF freshman
Alegria Lopez made a 12-foot birdie on the final hole to lift the Argonauts to a historic comeback victory in the Gulf South Conference Women's Golf Championship on Saturday.
Â
Trailing by nine shots entering the final round, UWF needed something big to happen to have a chance at the team title. They got just that in the form of a final-round, tournament-record 2-under-par 286 that was capped-off by Lopez's putt in the final group.
Â
The Argos got off to a fast start, making 10 birdies in the first seven holes. That, coupled with 10th-ranked Lee struggling in the same stretch, allowed UWF to pull even with the Lady Flames just over an hour into the day.
Â
From there UWF led by four at the turn before Lee tied it momentarily on 13. The Argos got the lead back to two as the final four groups started finishing. UWF played the final six holes prior to the final group at 1-under, but Lee got two huge birdies on 17 and 18 to set up the drama of the final group.
Â
Lee's Alex Naumovski and Lopez had nearly identical lines, with the Lady Flame slightly farther away. Her putt went right of the hole, setting up Lopez for the potential championship winner.
Â
After addressing the ball, the UWF freshman backed away and read her line one final time. She then calmly struck the flat stick flush, rolling her ball into the hole for a birdie, setting off a raucous celebration from her teammates and fans.
Â
The title is UWF's 11th in women's golf and 111th in all sports in school history.
Â
The 9-shot deficit is the largest overcome to win in GSC tournament history. UWF's last title came in similar fashion as the 2016 team climbed out of an 8-shot hole on the last day. The 2014 title for the Argos came in the form of a 6-stroke comeback over Lee.
Â
The final round score is the second-lowest in program history and the 54-hole total is the third lowest.
Â
Individually, junior
Solange Gomez birdied five of the first six holes and shot a 4-under-par 68 to come from five shots back to win by two over Lopez. Gomez, who had finished third and fourth in her two previous GSC Championships, shot a 77-75-68=220 for her first collegiate victory. The GSC individual medalist has now come from UWF nine times in the league's 17 seasons.
Â
Lopez shot a 75 on Saturday to secure runner-up honors with a 74-73-75=222 total.Â
Â
Junior
Ronja Taipale turned in her best round of the tournament, making four birdies en route to a 71. She climbed 10 spots into the top 10, finishing tied for eighth at 228.
Â
Freshman
Alia Scotka also saved her best for last, shooting an even-par 72, moving her into 11th position at 75-83-72=230. Sophomore
Payton Pacheco tied for 28th at 241.
Â
UWF will now await the NCAA Super Regional Championship announcement on Monday, April 25 to see who they will be competing with on May 2-4 when NCAA postseason play begins at Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Florida.
