UWF Prepares for a Pair of Tough Home Games Against GSC Opponents

The Argos are Currently Ranked One in the GSC Standings

Pensacola, Fla. --- Scoring a total of eight goals over the previous weekend to climb their way to the top of the GSC standings, the University of West Florida women's soccer team looks to continue their winning streak on home field against Auburn Montgomery, Friday, Sep. 30 at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 2 at 12:30 p.m. against Montevallo.

A Look Back
The Argos had one of their most successful weekends in the season so far defeating Union 1-0 (Sep. 23) and soaring through Christian Brothers 7-0 (Sep. 25).

Mya Swinton had the game-winning goal against Union that came in the 60th minute. Entering the game in the 21st minute, Swinton provide fresh legs on the field and led the team with four shots to end the first half.

The 61st minute is where Swinton made her mark and turned a set piece into a goal. On their eighth corner kick of the evening, a Bulldog player would be the first to have contact off the corner who headed it right at the feet of Swinton. Swinton used that to her advantage to calmy control the ball and find the small opening in the net.
Swinton and the Argos used that momentum into Sunday's game as seven different players scored.

The scoring action began at the 16th minute with Brianna Pope scoring off a corner kick by Ahnalie Layman with help from Kaytlyn Larsen to get the ball rolling for the Argos. Larsen earned another assist shortly after with a flying ball from half field to Julia Comin who found the pocket of the net to score her second goal of the season. Larsen and Layman sit at five points each for the team. Pope, Swinton and Comin have the second most points on the team at six apiece – Pope has three goals and Swinton and Comin sit together with two goals and two assists each.

Larsen and Layman sit together at the 10 and 11 ranking spots in assists with three apiece.

Entering the second half with a 2-0 lead, the Argos scored five more goals to create the largest margin of victory against Christian Brothers. Layman, Isabela Labovic and Madison Dulay scored their first season goals – Labovic and Dulay scored their first career goals off penalty kicks.

In the 73rd minute, Blair Cowan was able to add a goal to her name to get the final goal of the game as she found herself open in the middle of the pitch to sink a shot in the top left corner that was untouchable for the keeper. Cowan has six goals and 14 points on the season for a .600 goal average. Cowan is ranked fifth in goals and points in the conference.

Helping Lead the Way
Manami Okada has tallied 825 minutes in the center midfield position and has earned two goals – versus Alabama Huntsville in a 2-0 win (Sep. 9) and received the game winning goal off a header in a 2-1 win against West Georgia (Sep. 18).

Sitting behind Okada in minutes with 822 to help protect the net and get involved in opportunities in the attack is Kileigh Whited. Attacking from the wide channels to cross perfectly to Argo teammates, Whited has recorded two assists (against Alabama Huntsville and West Georgia) to help uplift the team in conference wins.

Week one's GSC Defensive Player of the Week, Maciah Lipsey, continues to protect the net to have the least goals allowed in the conference (3). In 10 consecutive starts, Lipsey has recorded 18 saves to earn a .857 save percent average and holds her opponents at a .33 scoring average.

Scouting Auburn Montgomery Warhawks
The Warhawks (1-6 overall, 1-3 GSC) are coming off a one-game weekend after taking on the Montevallo Falcons (Sep. 25) in a 1-0 loss. The Warhawks sit 12th in the conference just in front of Spring Hill and Shorter.

The Warhawks one win of the season was an ending score of 2-1 against Union (Sep. 16) with goals coming from Sydney Garth and Mayson Jaindl in the last five minutes of the game to give Union, at the time, their second conference loss. The remaining two conference losses came from Delta State (Sep. 11) and Christian Brothers (Sep. 18) that resulted in a devastating 2-1 end. The Warhawks came back from being down in both games with goals Jaindl to even out the score but would not be enough either time. Delta State and Christian Brothers would find a goal in the second half against the Warhawks to win off a one-goal difference.

The Warhawks have scored eight goals this season and five goals have come from Jaindl. Jaindl and defenders Maggie Flanagan and Gaby Walker are the only three Warhawks with seven consecutive starts.

Joining Jaindl in the scoring board is Garth, Ella Moody, and Julia Simoes. Moddy was awarded the first goal of the season in a 2-4 non-conference loss against Lynn (Aug. 25). In the following game against Florida Tech (Aug. 28), Simoes scored the Warhawks lone goal in a 1-3 loss.

Leading the Warhawks
Jaindl ranks top 10 in the conference in five of the six leader boards - eighth in points with ten, tied for sixth in goals (.714 goal average), ninth in shots at 16 and tenth in shots on goal with 11 coming on target. Joining on the leader board is midfielder Anila Mantello. In six played games, Mantello is tied for third in assist with four and has a top two assist average of .667. Mantello recorded three assists in the past two games.

Currently sitting at three in the GSC standings, the Falcons (8-1 overall, 4-1 GSC) have had a strong season so far. Coming off two wins over the weekend, the Falcons outscore their opponents 15-8.

Before taking on the Warhawks in a 1-0 win, the Falcons defeated Christian Brothers 2-0 (Sep. 16) and Union 2-1 (Sep. 18). The five most recent goals in the latest three games were scored by four different players. Epsy has seven points on the season and is ranked 15th in the GSC.

The two teams played each other twice in the 2019 season – during regular season conference and in the GSC Tournament Semifinals. The Argos came out successful in a close 1-0 game with a goal scored in the 67th minute but fell short 4-3 in penalty kicks in the conference tournament semifinals after a 2-2 tie in double overtime.
