UWF Climbs To Second After 36 Holes at NCAA Men's Golf Championships

The Argos are looking to qualify for medal match play for the seventh time since 2016

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. The UWF men's golf team shot a 282 and moved into a tie for second place following the middle day of stroke play at Orange County National in the 2024 NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships on Wednesday.

No. 8 UWF is 7-under for the tournament and tied with No. 5 Colorado Christian at 561. They are nine shots behind No. 6 Oklahoma Christian at 552. The Eagles combined for a 9-under round with all four counters in red numbers.

UWF had a strong round going after making the turn at 3-under. They had two bad holes on the back nine, playing Nos. 12 and 15 to a combined plus seven. The Argonauts bounced back and got a birdie from Fabian Wennerlof on 16 and a pair of birdies on 17 from Mason Minkel and Cooper Tendick.

Tendick and Per Ekelund are currently tied for tenth in the individual standings, which will be concluded after Thursday's round. Wyatt Provence of West Texas A&M leads the field at 9-under, three shots ahead of his nearest competitors.

Tendick shot a 68 to move up 32 spots after making five birdies, including on all three par fives – one of just three players in the field to do so. Ekelund's even-par round was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 14th, where he put a 7-iron to four feet for the putt.

TJ Thompson shot a 76 and is tied for 30th, while Fabian Wennerlof cut four strokes off his opening round 74 to climb 20 spots up to 48th. Minkel maintained his consistent play, signing for a 73 with a pair of birdies, including one on 17 down the stretch.

UWF will be in the final groupings on Thursday, playing with OCU and CCU beginning at 1:11 p.m. EDT.

The top eight teams after 54 holes will advance to Medal Match Play, beginning on Friday morning. UWF has participated in match play six times since 2016, tying for the most by any school over that period.
