GAME NOTES: UWF Baseball Set to Begin GSC Tournament

West Florida faces Lee at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday for first round

PENSACOLA, Fla.  –  The University of West Florida baseball team will participate in the Gulf South Conference Tournament for the eighth consecutive year beginning Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when the Argonauts face the Flames of Lee University.
 
GSC TOURNAMENT HISTORY: For the first time ever, the Gulf South Conference Tournament Champion will be crowned in Pensacola, as the No. 1-seeded Argonauts earned the right to host by clinching the GSC Regular Season Championship after a 7-5 win over Lee last Friday... West Florida aims to win its first GSC Tournament Championship since 2007 and second tournament championship in program history... West Florida was crowned regular season champions in 2011 but fell to Harding, 6-2, in the conference semifinal... In 2015, West Florida went 0-2 after a loss to West Georgia and West Alabama... UWF is 21-20 all-time in the GSC Tournament and looks to snap a three-game losing skid in tournament action.
 
RECORD SETTING: UWF's 24 GSC wins sets a new single-season high for the program, beating the 2014 record of 22 wins... UWF finished in first place in the GSC for the fifth time in the program's 21 seasons in the league.
 
THE HARDWARE: Headlined by Mike Jeffcoat's 2016 GSC Coach of the Year award, the Argonauts had a plentiful amount of recognition in the yearly All-GSC Awards, having a conference-high eight players receiving nods to all-conference teams... With these eight players added, UWF now has 112 players in program history to be named to the All-GSC team... It is the fourth GSC Coach of the Year Award for Jeffcoat, having won the award previously in 2007, 2011 and 2014... Jeffcoat's four awards is second amongst active GSC coaches.
 
VIEWS FROM THE TOP: The Argos have been fundamentally sound for the duration of the 2016 season, being in the conference's top-two teams in hitting, pitching and fielding... UWF's .332 in-conference batting average is the second best in the GSC, while its 2.92 team ERA and .980 GSC fielding percentage are the best in the conference.
 
RANKINGS UPDATE: West Florida saw a jump to No. 2 in the South Region in the second edition of the 2016 NCAA Regional Rankings, leapfrogging previous No. 2 Nova Southeastern... UWF sees its highest national ranking of the year in Perfect Game USA's national rankings, as the Argos sit at No. 9... The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper have the Argos ranked No. 12 and No. 13, respectively... D2 Baseball News has West Florida at No. 23.
 
VS. GSC TOURNAMENT TEAMS: Against the teams in the 2016 GSC Tournament, UWF has compiled a 9-4 record and batting .311 as a team... Ladeavon Matthews and Kyle Hamner lead the team offensively, owning batting averages of .432 and .422, respectively... JT Granat leads the rotation with a 3.24 ERA and a 3-1 record over four starts against those clubs... Jarrod Petree owns a 3-0 record with a 1.02 ERA over 17.2 innings of work and six appearances.... Sean Kennedy has four appearances against those teams and has a 2.16 ERA.
 
SOUTH REGION/NATIONAL STAT LEADERS: UWF's 2.92 team ERA is the best in the region, and seventh best in NCAA Division II... UWF's .970 fielding percentage is the second best in the South Region, and 25th best in the country... UWF's 8.82 hits allowed per nine innings is the 30th best in DII and the third best in the region... UWF's six shutouts is tied for most in the region and 11th most in the country... UWF owns the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the nation at 4.14... UWF's 1.19 WHIP is the best in the South Region and ninth best in DII... UWF has the best walks allowed per nine innings ratio in the country, at 1.87... JT Granat's 2.49 ERA is the fourth best in the South Region... Steve McClellan's nine saves is the most in the region and 14th most in DII... Kyle Hamner remains to be the toughest player in DII to strikeout, having only one strikeout per 51 at bats... Granat's 1.12 WHIP is the third best in the region... Walker O'Connor's 1.35 walks per nine is the best in the South Region and 29th best in DII.
