PENSACOLA, Fla.- UWF Head Baseball coach
Mike Jeffcoat announced the addition of nine new players who will be joining the Argo baseball team, when the season begins in spring 2021.
Joining the squad will be catcher Jack Schad (Tennessee Tech/Marietta, Ga.), infielders Kyle D'Amour (Roswell HS/Roswell, Ga.) and Tyler Dowdy (Plant City HS/Plant City, Fla.), pitchers Robert Sherlock (Washington HS/Pensacola, Fla.) and Chase Stanhope (West Florida HS/Cantonment, Fla.), outfielder Joey Wozniak (Wallace State CC/Dothan, Ala.) and utility players, Colin Whibbs (Pensacola Catholic HS/Gulf Breeze, Fla.), Jason Roberts (Pine Forest HS/Pensacola, Fla.) and Josh Majors (Jay HS/Jay, Fla.).
Schad, a transfer from Tennessee Tech, hit .269 with eight runs driven in, in 27 games for the Golden Eagles in the 2019 campaign before appearing in three games during the shortened 2020 season. A native of Marietta, Georgia, Schad played at Walton High School where he compiled an impressive resume. He received three varsity letters, won a state title as a senior and also led the squad to numerous other region and district titles. The 6-1, 200-pound catcher, hit .333 with five home runs and had a .615 slugging percentage in his final season at Walton.Â
Kyle D'Amour, a middle infielder from Roswell, Georgia, is next on our countdown. He was rated as the 63
rd best shortstop in the state by Perfect Game Baseball after being a three-year letter winner for the Hornets. D'Amour also played travel ball for 643 DP.
A 6-2, 210-pound INF/RHP, Tyler Dowdy is the third argonaut to join the squad. Ranked as the seventh-best first baseman in all of Florida high school baseball by PG, Dowdy enjoyed much of his success during his senior season on the mound. He earned three wins on the mound for the Raiders, collecting 26 strikeouts and earning a 1.75 earned run average during the shortened 2020 campaign.Â
Â
Sherlock, a right-handed pitcher from nearby Washington High School, is next on our list. The 6-2, 190-pound righty was a two-sport athlete in high school as he also was the starting quarterback for the Wildcats. A three-year varsity letterman in baseball, he posted a 1.41 era with 47 strikeouts over 18 varsity appearances while also swinging over .300 at the plate in his career.
Â
Joining Sherlock on the mound will be another local product, Chase Stanhope, who hails from West Florida High School. Stanhope was off to a great start in 2020 before the Covid-19 shutdown, posting a 3-1 record with a 1.24 era and 28 strikeouts. He also excelled at the plate with one home run and six RBI's. In 2019, he fanned 55 batters in just over 50 innings, while collecting a 2-0 record with a 1.77 era. Â
Â
Wozniak, a transfer from Wallace-Dothan CC, will also toe the rubber for the Argos in 2021. Coming out of high school, the Dothan, Alabama product was ranked as the 21
st best pitcher in all of Alabama according to PG. In 2020, he had a .333 batting average with one home run and six RBI's in 14 contests for the Governors.Â
Â
Colin Whibbs, a two-sport star from Pensacola Catholic, is the first utility player on our list. Whibbs, listed at 6-0, 185-pounds, played centerfield for the crusaders and had a .258 batting average, scoring seven runs and driving in five to go along with four stolen bases. The native of Pensacola, Florida, was also the starting quarterback for Pensacola Catholic, leading the team to a perfect 10-0 record and earning a regional final appearance. Whibbs, a member of the Florida Dairy Farmer's state all-academic team, was also enshrined in the Catholic High Hall of Fame in January.
Â
The fourth new member of the team hailing from Northwest Florida is fellow utility player, Jason Roberts. Roberts who played catcher, first and third base, outfield and pitched in high school, will make an impact all over the diamond for the Argos in 2021. Although ranked by PG as the 36
th best catcher in all of Florida, Roberts made a name for himself on the mound for Pine Forest High School. In his junior season for the Eagles, Roberts went 4-0 on the mound with 46 strikeouts while also batting .325 with 16 RBI's, leading the team to finish the season ranked 25
th in the country by MaxPreps. He had a career-defining moment in his senior season, as he pitched a no-hitter that included 11 strikeouts.
Â
Finally, Josh Majors, a product from nearby Jay, Florida, is the last newcomer on our list. Majors lit it up in his final high school season as he hit .400 with a .464 on-base percentage with seven RBI's in only seven contests due to the Covid-19 shortened schedule. In the 2019 campaign, he pitched to a 6-2 record and a 2.37 era to go along with 42 strikeouts in over 37 innings of work.Â
