Women's Basketball Picked Fourth in Preseason Poll

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team came in at No. 4 in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as announced on Monday afternoon.

The Argos received 92 points in the poll coming in behind Union, Lee, and UAH. There are 12 teams that make up the GSC.

Last season UWF went 20-11 and finished 15-7 in the conference while earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the GSC Championships the Argos took down Valdosta in the first round before falling to the No. 1 seed Union in the semifinals.

Head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton and her staff brought in 13 new players this season with junior guard Carmen Jones as the lone returner from last year's squad.

Three players made the Newcomers to Watch list this season, including Amelia Bell, Isabel Grimes and Avery O'Connor.

Bell is a 6-foot-2 graduate student transfer from Mississippi College. Grimes, a 5-foot-5 guard from Kentucky joins the Argos from the University of Montevallo, and O'Connor is a 6-foot senior forward from the University of New Hampshire.

West Florida has a busy early-season schedule which includes a trip to the WBCA Showcase at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports and a trip to play two games in Puerto Rico. The season tips off on Friday, Nov. 14 against Palm Beach Atlantic at the GSC/SSC South Region Crossover.
