The post-game announcement of her recent 600
th career win had UWF's legacy volleyball coach
Melissa Wolter unaware it even happened.
"Honestly, I didn't hear it. It means I've been doing it a long time, I guess," said Wolter, laughing, after her team produced the feat with a three-set sweep of Mississippi College on parents' night Nov. 7 at the UWF Field House. "I was just so pleased with how well we played… and the attention to scouting reports and way we pressured different areas of (Mississippi College) game.
"I was really impressed with our performance, so that's where I am."
The milestone night was part of three wins in five days by the Argos (23-5), who enter the final weekend of the regular season ranked No. 22 in the current American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division II poll.
With a 16-2 record in the Gulf South Conference, the Argos would clinch first place, top-seed and host team for the GSC Tournament on Nov. 21-23 with a win Friday night at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. The following day, the schedule concludes with a game at Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville.
Both are opponents UWF beat 3-1 in earlier matchups at the UWF Field House. This is still an unusual final-week position for the Argos, who had not lost two conference games since 2016 and were unbeaten in GSC play in three of the past five seasons.
During this stretch, UWF has reeled off seven consecutive GSC Tournament championships.
This team, however, has developed with just two seniors. The group sustained back-to-back road losses against Alabama-Huntsville and Montevallo prior to last week's bounce-back performances.
"I'm just happy the work we put in the last two weeks really showed," Wolter said. "And the losses, we just had, that's not who we are. We just said (in team meeting), we're not going to let that be any part of our identity, other than making us better.
The team's response to adversity added to Wolter's satisfaction as she joined her players in a celebratory, courtside photo as keepsake memory of 600 career wins. Wolter is in her 21
st season at UWF, following her first three seasons as head coach of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Her career achievements require pages to document. But one of the most standout elements is that her teams have won 25 or more games in 17 of the past 19 seasons, including nine in a row. That is what made win No. 600 settle in.
"It is really special," Wolter said. "It just kind of reminds me of how the legacy of this program is not just me… it's so many people.
"All the staff members, all the players, the support staff and everyone here in the community, it's really cool."

Each team is naturally different. The current one stands out, not only for the number of freshmen and sophomores (14), but also there are eight players, who played high school volleyball in a region from Tallahassee to Mobile, including redshirt sophomore
Camryn Brooks, a Gulf Breeze High grad.
It's the most regional players Wolter believes have played on the same UWF team.
"I think it's great," she said. "I think it produces a great crowd, because you have a lot a lot of girls who have a big following and when you are driving (less than two hours in most cases), it's way different than driving six, seven, or eight hours to get here.
"I love that is creating a home-grown tradition. I think it makes people in this area know that if you are that type of player that come in and help us, we are going to go after you. And I think this area has gotten a lot stronger in volleyball. Really in the last five to seven years. We would like to keep garnering local talent and I think it's a cool thing."
Another element is the youthful development Wolter has seen. UWF has a chance to match or surpass win totals of recent teams without having a lineup of seniors to rely upon.
"I don't want to lean into making excuses that we are young, we are inexperienced," she said. That is factual this year, but it needs to be why we win, and not putting a band-aid on a loss. I love the youthfulness, the passion, These players have a lot fo fun. And when we get them to do what we need them to be doing, they are reigned-in and focused on the task at hand."
