MEN'S GOLF WINS 2025 NCAA DII NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – For the third time in program history and first time since 2008 the University of West Florida men's golf team are the NCAA Division II National Champions.

It was one for the history books on Friday at PGA National Resort. The day matched the temperament of the UWF golf team. Scrappy and resilient. And in the end, in what was one of the most entertaining finishes you'll see in collegiate golf, the Argos came out on top in a playoff hole to accomplish the main goal of the season.

The medal match play was neck and neck throughout the entire day with the score sitting at 2.5 to 2.5 for the majority. As Fabian Wennerlof and his opponent approached on the No. 18 hole the horn blew to suspend play due to inclement weather.

Both teams then were forced to wait over four hours until action resumed. But when the horn blew again to start play it seemed as though "the show" was just beginning.

Wennerlof had gone one up on his opponent on the 16th hole and on No. 18 the senior played it safe as Colorado Christian's Xavier Bighaus put his shot in the water. Wennerlof took no risks as him and Bighaus both bogeyed the hole, giving Wennerlof the win.

The teams split the next two decisions with Eddie Lee falling to Sungyeop Cho while Per Ekelund defeated Sangha Park. A couple holes back Cooper Tendick had fallen behind in his match leaving TJ Thompson and the No. 1 ranked NCAA DII golfer Adam Duncan of CCU as the deciding pair in the match.

Thompson had fought back from being down four strokes to Duncan. He won three straight holes starting on No. 13 to cut the deficit to one. Thompson birdied the challenging No. 17 par 3 to tie the match. On the final hole Thompson drilled a putt to match Duncan's birdie and send the tournament into a playoff hole.

But the fireworks didn't stop there for the Argos.

The playoff format required all five players from each team to play one hole with the total combined score on that hole determining the winner. The teams jumped over to hole No. 10 – a 545-yard par 5.

Ekelund provided the first spark for the Argos in a putt that will long be remembered and will go down in the archives as one of the most memorable shots in UWF golf history. After getting on in two shots, sitting on the right-hand side of the green, Ekelund lined up his long putt and drained it from 70 feet out to record an eagle, giving UWF the early advantage.

Tendick barely missed his par putt but was quickly picked up by Thompson who found the bottom of the cup for birdie. CCU posted two birdies to keep the score tied.

The next group approached the green from their tee off which included Wennerlof and Lee for the Argos and three CCU players.

Wennerlof hit the green in two shots and Lee had put his ball in the right-side bunker. Lee provided an excellent shot out of the bunker to give himself a putt for birdie. Wennerlof nearly made his 70-foot eagle putt which he then tapped in for birdie. After a lip out putt from CCU, a make by Lee would give the Argos the national title.

That's exactly what Lee did. The junior buried his putt from 8 feet to help UWF capture it's third national title in men's golf.

Head coach Steve Fell has been at the helm of each National Championship in his 31 years leading the Argos.

UWF finishes the year with five tournament wins, a conference championship and a national championship.
