DANVILLE, Ala. – An Impressive all-around day for UWF women's cross country at the Firehawk Invitational was highlighted by a record-breaking race by freshman
Elyse Carmichael.
The Pensacola native set the women's 6K school record, running a 22:03.22, breaking the previous record of 22:10 set by current runner
Ava Baldauf at NCAA Regionals in 2023.
Carmichael finished second out of 120 runners, and just three seconds behind first place. She was one of five finishers in the top 20, as the Argos' team average for the women's 6K was a 22:47. The Argos also finished ahead of fellow Gulf South Conference team West Alabama, and was the top DII finisher at the event.
"It was our first 6k of season and we wanted to set tone of 6K's moving forward the rest of the season. I encouraged being aggressive, we set lots of personal records today," head coach
Caleb Carmichael said.
"Elyse getting the school record was big and we are excited for the future, and we can do the rest of the season."
Jessica Chappell and
Chloe Rook placed fourth and fifth overall, running 6K times of 22:17.85 and 22:37.55 respectively.
Sydney Orth placed 19
th, running a personal record with a 23:23 time and improving her last 6K time by a 1:23. Newcomer
Madison Sims finished just behind her at 20
th to secure the Argos' second place team finish, running a 23:33 in her first 6K.
Kristen Bouington placed 24
th and ran another PR for the team, shaving almost a minute off her best 6K with a 24:11.42 finish.
Sierra Howard also ran a PR, beating her best by three seconds with a 24:15.37 time to place 26
th.
Gwen Shamel finished 44
th overall with a 25:19.96 time.
Olivia Noack was close behind her at 45
th with a 25:33.36 finish.
Julia Alvarez Drago finished 59
th running a 26:39.90.
Ambrea Hobbs finished 69
th overall with a 27:28.80 time.
