The 1997 Men’s Tennis team at UWF celebrated an outstanding year in their first year of eligibility in the NCAA. Under the leadership of Coach Ralph “Skeeter” Carson, the team finished its season in the NCAA Championship match. The team would compete in the finals, earning a #2 final ranking. This standing proved an excellent achievement for a team developing from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II. The team functioned under strong individual players, as well as collective efforts. Three members of the 1997 team were All-Gulf South Conference players, including the GSC East Player of the Year, Patric Staalbark, and the doubles team of Holger Rebholz and Jens Gerlach who received the ITA/NCAA Division I All-American Doubles honors.
