UWF HALL OF FAME - CLASS OF 2010-11
Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Milton Usry served as the University of West Florida’s faculty 
athletics representative from 1987 until his retirement in 2005. In addition to his FAR position, Usry was a professor in UWF’s Accounting and Finance Department.
Usry came to UWF on what he thought was a temporary basis in the spring of 1985 after teaching for 25 years at Oklahoma State University. He chose to stay at UWF permanently to occupy an endowed professorship position in the field of accounting. Usry stayed with UWF until his retirement from teaching.
Usry was asked to serve as Faculty Athletics Representative in 1987. “When I accepted the position, I didn’t know that I would do it for 18 years,” he said. “But the years passed quickly, and I considered the job both enjoyable and worthwhile.” Usry estimates that he worked on the eligibility of more than 2,500 student-athletes during his time as FAR.
Usry says that his greatest memory of serving as FAR is the time spent working with former UWF Athletic Director Richard Berg. “I started in the position of FAR not long before Mr. Berg became Athletics Director, and it was my great pleasure to work with him for so many years,” said Usry. “He always ran a squeaky-clean program and served with great integrity.”
Usry and his wife, Dona, recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They have two sons: Wayne, who works at the University of North Texas, and Mark, who works at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. Usry also has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Usry is retired, but he and Dona are both still very active in the Pensacola community. He has served in several capacities at Baptist Health Care, while Dona is in her 12th year as a trustee at Pensacola State College. They also volunteer with the Manna Food Pantries, the Pensacola Symphony, the Council on Aging, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, among others.
When they aren’t volunteering, Milton and Dona can often be seen at UWF basketball games. “My wife and I both feel very strongly about UWF,” said Milton. “It is a great honor to be invited to join the Athletics Hall of Fame.”
