Like many college students, the early part of a new school and new freedoms can prove to be challenging and chaotic. That was the case for Diego Zorzi, who came to UWF on the recommendation of a friend who had played for the Argos previously.
Â
Those hard days soon faded into the background as the Argentinian grew more comfortable with his surroundings.
Â
"As a personal life, it was hard at the beginning," he said. "It was a different country and different language from what you are used to. But day by day I started learning different things that helped me then and that I still use to this day."
Zorzi was part of three NCAA Tournament teams, including the 2005 national championship squad that went 29-2 and a back-to-back title from 2004. Zorzi played with a badly pulled hamstring and teamed with German Dalmagro to win four doubles matches in the national tournament, prompting head coachÂ
Derrick Racine to say at the time that it was the gutsiest performance he had seen.
Â
Zorzi finished as a 3-time All-American and All-GSC performer. He was voted the 2005 GSC Freshman of the Year and the Player of the Year the next two seasons.
Â
"For me there are so many wonderful memories as I look back on my time in Pensacola," he said. "It really was a great experience because it was totally different from what I came from. Going from town to town – in the middle of nowhere sometimes – to play tennis against people from all over the world was so unique. Playing for a team as opposed to just yourself was such a great experience and of course, we won a lot of matches back then."
Â
The Argonauts went 81-13 and won a pair of GSC Championships as well during his time at UWF.
Â
He earned his bachelor's degree in Business Finance in 2007 and moved to Miami shortly thereafter. He has owned two businesses for the past 10 years, working with an LED Solar Company and as a building developer.
Â
Zorzi and his wife, Maridelie, have been married for seven years.
