From 1994-1998, Anthony Russell proved to be one of the strongest competitors of the UWF Men’s Basketball team. He earned the GSCCO Rookie of the Year honors and played in all 28 games as a freshman, starting in 19. He averaged 13.0 points and 6.1 rebounds, finishing 2nd in the GSC in field goal shooting at 66.4%. He set two UWF single game records, scoring 32 points against West Georgia and scoring 9 of 9 shots from the floor.

When he was in high school, he was the lead scorer in the Jacksonville area while attending Fernandina Beach High School. Russell averaged 25 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.

By 1996, he was the Argos’ top returning player, scorer and rebounder from the previous year’s NAIA Tournament team. He became famous for his slam dunks among UWF crowd favorites and scored in double figures 22 times. He started in 26 games at forward and fell 3 field goals shy of the GSC minimum for the conference shooting title. He was named to the All-City team 3 years in a row and scored 1,336 career points with 521 rebounds. In 1997, he was a GSC East First Team pick  as a senior and scored a total of 191 field goals, 109 free throws, 310 rebounds, 22 assists, and 24 blocked shots. Russell competed as a top performing athlete in his career at UWF, and contributed highly to the prestigious reputation of the UWF Basketball program.
