When Wayne Giddings played baseball at West Florida from 1982 to 1983, the varsity athletic program had been newly reinstated, and Giddings became one of the most memorable pitchers to come across the UWF diamond. He played two seasons at West Florida and earned first-team NAIA All-District 27, All-Southern States Conference honors both years and All-America his senior year.

He was a 1983 All-Conference pick and held a number of school pitching records. He ranks in 15 different categories, including most complete games in a season (10) and most strikeouts in a career (165). He pitched two 1-hitters his senior year, winning 31 games and losing 20 in addition to converting 12 saves. He also pitched the winning game over NCAA Division I Mississippi State.

He graduated in 1983 with a bachelor’s in Sociology and signed a professional contract with the Oakland A’s where he played five years in their farm league. He climbed as high as AAA and by 1985, he played 49 games with the Huntsville Stars.
