UWF HALL OF FAME - CLASS OF 2008-09

Jim Spooner was the UWF baseball team’s Head Coach from 1983-2005, compiling a record of 688-521-1 and leading the Argonauts to three Southern States Conference titles and two Gulf South Conference East Division championships. On August 22, 2008, UWF named its baseball field after the long-time coach. Spooner was unable to attend the field dedication due to a lengthy battle with leukemia, and he passed away less than a month later on September 13.

Spooner is survived by his wife Carolyn and their two daughters Lindsey DeWald and 10307Jamie Sousa.  Jamie Sousa is married to Tim, and Lindsey DeWald and her husband David have two children, seven year old Carson Elizabeth and three year old Caroline Faith.

Hall of Fame Questionnaire (completed by wife Carolyn)

1. What was your most memorable moment in UWF athletics?
There were many memorable moments, but I think the most memorable was winning the trip to the NAIA College World Series in 1989.

2. Please list any other information that you would like to share.
Jim died of Acute Myeloid Leukemia on September 13, 2008.  His love of baseball was apparent from the time we met in 1971 until his death, and he was so grateful for all of the former ballplayers who were loyal and caring through his illness.  He began his career at UWF in 1982, and he retired in 2005, but he never retired from baseball.  He worked part time with the Baseball Factory until he was diagnosed with AML in September of 2007, and he loved the time he spent working with young players, sharing his love for the game.  Even after his diagnosis, he often would drive over to the baseball field and watch practice.  The relationships he developed over his years at UWF were many, and everyone who knew him understood just how special those relationships, both in and out of baseball, were to him.
