Jeff Gray contributed to the early tennis program at UWF when he transferred from Troy University his senior season of 1968-1969 to help start the new program. He was a relative newcomer to tennis and did not start playing the game until his freshman year at Chipola College. He helped start the tennis program his freshman season and after junior college, he transferred to Troy. When his coach, Preston Griffin, was hired at UWF, he transferred for his senior season.

After college, Gray became a high school teacher and basketball coach until he returned to tennis at Middle Tennessee State University. After earning his master’s degree, he began teaching at the Pensacola Racquet Club. Gray has also earned notoriety in the Mobile tennis community, where he has served as tennis director at the Country Club of Mobile for nearly two decades.

Gray had an excellent tennis career earning #1 ranking multiple times in Alabama, and he was ranked #5 in the South. He was inducted into the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame where he is a past president. He then joined the management committee of the Southern Tennis Association.

Gray met his wife, Kathy, his first day at UWF. The couple has one daughter, Mary Claire Fowler.
