A graduate of UWF in 2007, Clara Fornella competed for the women’s golf team
from 2003 to 2007. Fornella earned All-America second team honors her freshman year and was selected the Division II National Freshman of the Year by the National Golf Coaches Association, the only Argonaut ever to win the award.
A native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Fornella led West Florida to two GSC Championships throughout her career and was a three-time All-GSC selection (the GSC did not select an all-conference team during her freshman year). She was also named an NGCA All-America Scholar Athlete in 2004 and 2005, the only UWF women’s golfer to earn the award twice, and she was selected to the GSC All-Academic team in 2005.
During her four-year career at UWF, the four-time letterwinner helped the Argos win 13 team titles. She also won four individual tournament titles, which is the most in school history. Clara also has the second best scoring average for a career at 78.27. During her senior year she helped UWF reach its highest GolfStat national ranking ever at No. 4 overall.
Fornella is currently a tax accountant for Carter CPA, LLC in Destin, Fla. and enjoys playing golf on the weekends.
UWF Athletics Hall of Fame Questionnaire: Clara Fornella
1. What was your most memorable moment in UWF Athletics?
My most memorable moment has to be my very first tournament. It was in Kiawah Island, and I had no idea what to expect. The place was beautiful, we had an amazing time, and we ended up winning as a team and I also won the individual title. I have lots of great memories but this one is my top one.
2. Being a former student-athlete, how has it helped you in your life after college?
It certainly did. Being a student-athlete shows discipline, and employers like that. We talked a lot about golf on the interview with my current employer.
3. Are you still involved with your sport? If so, in what capacity?
I wish I was more involved! I play on the weekend and of course I'm not able to practice four hours a day like we did. I try and play as many times I can during the year, and I'm sure I'll always be somehow involved with golf.
4. Please list any other information that you would like to share.
Being a student-athlete was not only the most amazing experience of my life, it left me the best friends I could ask for. I'm still in touch with my teammates and coach and I will always be thankful to UWF for them.
