UWF HALL OF FAME - CLASS OF 2012-13
One of the best guards West Florida has ever seen, Michelle Gibson led the
Argonauts during their most successful three-year period in school history. UWF posted a record of 61-24 in her three years, and the team won a Gulf South Conference East Division championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in her senior season in 2005-06. She earned all-tournament team honors at the regional tournament, scoring over 20 points in both games as the Argos advanced to the semifinals.
Gibson is a two-time Daktronics All-South Region first team honoree, earning the achievements in her junior and senior seasons. To add to her list of accomplishments, she was the Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Year 2004-05, a three-time All-GSC first team honoree and the UWF Female Athlete of the Year in 2004-05.
Gibson, a native of Windsor, Ontario, is ranked fourth in all-time scoring with 1,444 points and eighth in assists with 247 in three seasons at UWF. She holds school records in steals (280) and three-point field goals (164) in a career.
Her name is scattered across the UWF record books for single season accomplishments. She holds three of the top five spots for most steals in a single season, breaking into the top five in the category in every year that she played at UWF. She broke the record with 112 steals in 2003-04, got into the top three with 89 in 2004-05 and then tied for fourth with 79 in 2005-06.
Gibson is currently a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, working with preoperative and postoperative patients. She is married to Tavaris Brooks, and they have two children: Nylah (3) and Leah (11 months).
UWF Athletics Hall of Fame Questionnaire: Michelle Gibson
1. What was your most memorable moment in UWF athletics?
I was named Female Athlete of the Year at UWF. Not only did I feel a sense of pride in my sport, but I also felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment as a student-athlete.
2. Being a former student-athlete, how has it helped you in your life after college?
It has positively influenced my life in multiple dimensions: dealing with my family, profession, and social interactions. I learned effective time management skills, leadership skills, and developed a strong work ethic to accomplish day-to-day goals.
3. Are you still involved with your sport? If so, in what capacity?
Currently, I am focused on raising a family and my career. During nursing school, I was the varsity assistant women’s basketball coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola. In the future, I plan to coach and personal train young female athletes.
4. Please list any other information that you would like to share.
My inspiration and talent came from my parents, Gary and Sherry Gibson. My parents helped me turn my dreams into a reality and my coaches, Shannan Bergen and Joe Best, made me believe that with hard work the sky is the limit.
